It started with two right swipes on Hinge and a little white lie. Andrew pretended to be in a Fantasy Football league to get some advice from Claire as an icebreaker to start the conversation. Luckily for him, Claire didn’t catch on that he had never played before and agreed to go on a date with him.  They had their first date in Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia on a very hot night in June 2021. It involved drinks at a restaurant with no reservation, which Claire thought was a major faux pas, and both of them trying to hide how sweaty they were from each other. To add onto the heat of the night, their sparks flew and the rest is history.  After three years of dating, they now live together in Philadelphia with their toothy dog, Buzz and body positive cat, Maxey.

What to Do in Philadelphia…  Since many out-of-towners will be the ones viewing this page, I volunteered to put together a list of things-to-do from a Dad perspective. Specifically, from Claire’s Dad’s perspective.  Many of us Dads like history, and Philadelphia has plenty of it.   If you’re staying at one of the hotel blocks that have been reserved for the big day, it will be easy for you to visit the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. We’ve walked by the Liberty Bell and seen crazy lines…and come back later and there have been no lines. You’ll get to see a big bell! But it’s historic and you can get a great picture with Independence Hall in the background.  The tours of Independence Hall–where the Declaration of Independence was signed–are free with a small service charge, but you need to reserve a ticket for timed entry. Click below to get your ticket. This is of course where Nicholas Cage found those trick glasses which allowed him to see the secret map on the back of the Declaration of Independence. But please stay with your tour guide to avoid possible arrest.  Close by is the Museum of the American Revolution…also educational and historical that rates highly on the Dad-meter. And you can also check out Elfreth’s Alley, a cobblestone street with homes dating back to the 18th century.   Moving away from history…some other Philly highlights.  Of course, one of Philadelphia's most famous residents is Rocky Balboa, and you too can run the Rocky steps where Rocky trained and see the Rocky statue. Rocky was a great champion, but it always bothered me that he never gave Clubber Lang another shot at the title. At the top of the steps is the Philadelphia Art Museum…it’s supposed to be nice, but I’ve not yet visited.  We’ve visited the Magic Gardens which is a combination of mosaic art with both an indoor gallery and lots of outdoor space. Weird and cool, fees to enter.   Reading Terminal Market has 75+ different food shops, counters, restaurants to choose from, and although I have not yet partaken of the famous Philly Cheese Steak (featuring cheese-whiz!), I have no doubt you can find one here.   Some other things that I’ve not yet had the chance to do in Philly…but some day…  Penn’s Landing and Waterfront…revitalized area next to the river, Penn’s Landing has beer gardens, food, and entertainment options for the family.  McGillin’s Olde Ale House – Established in 1860, the same year Abraham Lincoln was elected President, McGillin’s Olde Ale House is the oldest, continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia and one of the oldest taverns in the country. These days, thirsty patrons can choose from 30 beers on draft, including several Philadelphia-made microbrews. (Note, Andrew advises it’s an establishment more for the younger crowd as the evening progresses.)  Want to ignore everything I’ve written? I don’t blame you.
