Caveman & Ducky

March 26th, 2016. Our first steps on the Appalachian Trail. We both set out on the exact same day, but from different starting points: Joe (a.k.a. Caveman) from the approach trail at Amicalola Falls and Angela (a.k.a. Ducky) from the official plaque at the top of Springer Mountain. Our paths would not cross for 5 days, which is when our love story truly began. One&nbsp;stormy&nbsp;night&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;mountains&nbsp;of&nbsp;North&nbsp;Georgia,&nbsp;a&nbsp;rainstorm had&nbsp;us&nbsp;in&nbsp;search&nbsp;of&nbsp;shelter.&nbsp;Even&nbsp;though&nbsp;our&nbsp;paths&nbsp;had&nbsp;not&nbsp;yet&nbsp;crossed,&nbsp;we&nbsp;were&nbsp;both&nbsp;searching&nbsp;for&nbsp;the&nbsp;same&nbsp;thing...a&nbsp;dry&nbsp;shelter&nbsp;to&nbsp;weather&nbsp;the&nbsp;storm.&nbsp; We were cold, wet, hungry, and tired, and all decided to hike 1.4 miles off trail to an 'off the beaten path' shelter to find refuge, which no hiker does unless desperate. The official introductions didn't take place until the following day when both parties decided to take a zero at the shelter to dry out all our gear. Joe pulled out his bear line and made us a makeshift clothesline, so we could dry out. We spent the day hanging out, sharing stories, and getting to know one another. After this relaxing zero, we (Dad, and Squirrel, and I) would end up leap frogging with Caveman for the next week. He hiked so fast that the only time we'd catch up with him was when he was filtering water or taking a smoke break, but it was always with an animated greeting where we'd yell out "CAVEMAN!" He was always so kind and easy-going that we all instantly connected. Our&nbsp;paths&nbsp;were&nbsp;only&nbsp;permanently&nbsp;intertwined&nbsp;the&nbsp;day we all were crossing the border from Georgia to North Carolina. Dad was in the lead and talking about how he knew the sign for the borderline was right around the bend, when he raised his hand to point ahead. That is when I saw his right ankle twist at strange and unnatural angles when he stepped on an exposed root. I just remember screaming "NO!!" Before I knew it, dad was on the ground,&nbsp;broken&nbsp;ankle, miles up a mountain, in the middle of the woods. Luckily, Squirrel called for help with his measly 1-2 bars. Help was on the way! It was probably 2 hours later, when the first rescue firefighter arrived: an older gentleman in tight jeans and cowboy boots. He just hiked that same mountain we took all day to hike...in cowboy boots! He broke the news that dad was going up, not down the mountain...his helicopter ride was waiting. News had traveled to camp at the top of the mountain that an&nbsp;older&nbsp;hiker had been injured down the trail and Joe immediately took it upon himself to run back down the trail to see how he could be of assistance.&nbsp;&nbsp;That's just the kind of guy Joe is. When I saw Caveman running down the trail, I was relieved to see a friendly face. He grabbed one of our packs, turned around, and started helping the others push my injured dad up to top of the mountain where his ride would be arriving soon. Joe stayed right next to my dad, sheltering him from the flying debris, comforting him from the uneasiness of the situation, and ultimately being a person who you knew you could rely on.&nbsp;Joe's attentiveness and care for my dad is what solidified my trust in him. He displayed such compassion and willingness to help that we immediately knew who he was as a human being. A few days later, Joe&nbsp;and&nbsp;Squirrel&nbsp;agreed&nbsp;to&nbsp;continue&nbsp;their&nbsp;journey&nbsp;with&nbsp;me, and we were to meet&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;NOC in a few days' time.&nbsp;That's&nbsp;when&nbsp;our&nbsp;trail&nbsp;family&nbsp;solidified,&nbsp;and&nbsp;a&nbsp;love&nbsp;story&nbsp;began.

Everyone, meet Toni! She moved next door a few years ago, and I mustered the nerve to introduce myself. We followed our meet and greet with Friday Wine Chats where a true friendship blossomed. Toni has a heart of gold and puts others before herself.  Getting past the tough Long Island attitude, she's a true softy and we love her for that. We compliment one another perfectly having similar core values, but opposite outward personalities. She saw us struggling to plan a wedding and graciously volunteered to be our wedding coordinator. All heart ❤️

Meet Dr. Pooja Sheth, everyone. She and I have been friends since we were 14 years old, when we met at summer school before 9th grade. She has been a shining light of humbleness and sweetness. No matter the time or distance, we always come back as if we last saw one another the day before.

Meet Kristin Conrad, everyone. She has been my bestie since college when we shared the same education class. She sat in the back of class, shades on, and obviously had an eventful night before. And, I sat in the front of class engaged as ever. We are opposites in ever good way and compliment one another completely. She brought me out of my shell and showed me what it was like to let go and be free; and, I helped her focus in school, so she could blossom into the most amazing teacher she is today. She knows me better than I know myself at times, and has helped me get through some of my toughest chapters. She is one of those friends that no matter how much distance and time passes, we are always there for one another. ❤️

Meet Tiffani, everyone! She's the newest addition to the Dombrowski family when she married my brother is February of 2022. She has been the one to capture my brother's heart and inspire him to become the man he is today; and, for that, I appreciate and adore her. We look forward to watching them grow as a couple and as a family!

Everyone, meet Lyndsay! She's a beautiful soul that makes everyone feel welcomed at our family gatherings. She is referred to as "The Manager" due to her ability to corral the herd for those family photos, decorate a place in a jiffy, and keep everyone entertained with her TikTok dance moves. She's a joy to be around and you'll be guaranteed a fun and relaxing time with her in your company.
