By following these tips, we hope that you can have a smooth and enjoyable experience exploring London during our wedding festivities. Please let us know if you have any questions or want any additional tips!

Public Transportation

Opt for Public Transportation: In London, public transportation, including buses, trains, trams, and the Tube, is typically the fastest and most efficient way to get around the city. Traffic congestion can significantly slow down car travel, especially during peak hours.

Avoid Driving: Unless necessary, avoid driving (or taking a taxi/Uber) in central London. Driving is generally the slowest option and far less convenient compared to using public transportation.

Oyster Card or Contactless Payment: London's public transportation system is extensive and efficient. Get an Oyster card or use contactless payment (e.g., credit/debit card, mobile phone) for travel on buses, trains, trams, and the Tube (London Underground). It's cheaper and more convenient than buying single tickets. Cash payments are not accepted.

Stand on the Right: When using escalators in Tube stations, stand on the right side to allow others to pass on the left, especially during rush hours.

Mind the Gap: This iconic phrase is a reminder to watch your step when entering or exiting trains on the London Underground. There's a small gap between the train and the platform.

Signal the Bus: Unlike some cities where buses stop automatically at every bus stop, in London, you need to signal the bus to stop. As the bus approaches, raise your hand to signal the driver that you wish to board.

Cashless Payments

Contactless Everywhere: London is very much a cashless city. Most places accept contactless payments, including restaurants, shops, and public transportation. Have your payment cards loaded on your phone and you'll be good almost everywhere across London.

Cash: While it might good to have some cash for emergencies (no need to carry more than £40), you'll find that most places prefer card payments. It may come to surprise to those traveling from outside the UK, but many places in London will not accept cash payments at all, while nearly everywhere accepts card (even street vendors).

General Etiquette

Queuing: British people take queuing (lining up) seriously. Always queue in an orderly manner, whether it's at a bus stop, in a shop, or waiting for a train.

Ordering at the Pub: In pubs, it's customary to order drinks and food directly from the bar. Queue patiently and wait for your turn to be served. In most pubs, you'll pay for your drinks and food immediately upon ordering. Keep in mind that it's common to order and pay for each round separately rather than running a tab.

Tipping: Tipping in London is generally discretionary but appreciated at restaurants for exceptional service. A standard tip is around 10% of the bill. Beware to not tip twice - many restaurants will automatically add a 12.5% service charge to the bill. At a pub, it is not common to tip for drinks (and an option to tip is not typically given).

Be Polite: Please and thank you go a long way in London. Politeness is highly valued in British culture, so remember to use courteous language in your interactions.

Dress Code: London is a diverse city with a variety of fashion styles. Dress comfortably for exploring but consider slightly more upscale clothing for restaurants or evening events.

Emergency Services: In case of emergency, dial 999 for police, ambulance, or fire services.
