If you are staying in Oxford at the Hampton Inn or Oxford Casino Hotel the nearby town of Norway is well worth a visit. Settled in 1786 and once known as the “snowshoe capital of the world” its Main Street has a variety of dining options as well as small shops for browsing.

Cafe Nomad is a breakfast, brunch, and lunch restaurant (open for dinner on weekends). Their baked goods are made daily from “scratch”, their coffee selections are from Carrabassett Coffee Company (a local roaster), and their omelettes and sandwiches are noteworthy. Fun ambiance too.

Norway Brewing Company is a family-owned microbrewery with a cool vibe. Its taproom is open year-round and features an assortment of beers with names such as Mr. Grumpy Pants, Lust for Gold, and Hot & Steamy (wine is available too); and its outdoor beer garden is open during the warmer months. They pride themselves on using locally sourced ingredients and work with fruit and vegetable growers and livestock and dairy farmers to offer an interesting and delicious menu that varies with the season. Think Brooklyn comes to Maine (in a good way!).

Smokin’ Dave’s Backyard BBQ offers BBQ ribs and pulled pork along with homemade sides, sauces, and dessert in a family-friendly setting. Salads, burgers, steaks, chilis, and sandwiches are also on the menu. Take-out is available.

Taste of Eden Vegan Cafe is a local, fresh vegan cuisine restaurant. It offers a healthy whole foods menu in a “home kitchen” setting. Look for daily specials of soups, salads, and sandwiches made with whole grain bread baked fresh daily. Open for lunch and early dinner.

X Vault Pub and Provisions is a gastropub in nearby South Paris and it calls itself “a diverse community of good food and good drinks.” The bar is pretty cool with the old bank vault and the signature cocktails and beers are fun — why not try the local Pennessewassee beer? The food ranges from pub food to food with an Asian fusion influence.
