What does the French name, Baton Rouge, translate to?

Red Stick

How did the city of Baton Rouge get its name?

Story has it that long ago, this area in Louisiana along the mightly Mississippi River was occupied by two indigenous tribes, the Houma Native American Tribe and the Bayougoula Native American Tribe. To settle a border conflict between them, the tribes used a cypress pole to mark the boundary dividing their hunting grounds. Explorers saw the cypress pole and dubbed the area “le Baton Rouge.” It is said that the blood of an animal that was spiked at the top was running down the “pole” which is why it was red in color.

What were the original names of the host hotels?

Formerly The Heidelberg Hotel, the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center is a luxury historic hotel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana dating back to 1927. The Hotel Indigo was originally The King Hotel.

Is it true a tunnel connects these two hotels under Lafayette Street?

Yes! However, it is no longer operable. The tunnel is steeped in history and played an important role during Huey P. Long’s aka The Kingfish’s (former Louisiana Governor from 1928 to 1932) political life. Completed in the late 20’s, the tunnel served as a connector between two hotels and allowed the opulent, full-service Heidelberg to create a similar experience for the smaller King hotel across the street including room service, valet, and laundry service. Later, The Tunnel became known as Peakcock Alley as it was adorned with ornate mosaic tiles and was also widely used by hotel guests and clientele. Rumor has it that Huey P. Long also used the tunnel to escape media and sneak his mistress from one hotel to the next. Check out The Tunnel inside the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center during your stay! It has been recently renovated and now serves as a speakeasy as well as an event space.
