Athens is a Foodie Paradise... here's some of our favorites:
****Note: Click on the underlined name of Restaurants/Activities to be taken to the websites of these spots for addresses/menus/etc.****
Ballin' breakfasts:
Mama's Boy - Those biscuits though!! 2 locations: the best one is off Macon Hwy (newer, cleaner, and if you sit on the patio you can hear the water!).
The Farm Cart - The best biscuit sandwich you've ever had!!! Catch the actual "farm cart" at the Farmer's Market Saturday morning at Bishop Park or go to the physical restaurant on Baxter St. Go for the crazy jalapeno or special jam of the day.
Big City Bread - Amazing outdoor space plus really great food for lunch and dinner as well! Or, just grab a cappuccino and a slice of cake!
Ike & Jane - grab a doughnut, it's worth it. Also egg sandwiches are always a win! Cheap, fast, and adorable.
The cheap, low-key lunch spots:
Taqueria Del Sol - A&A's favorite! Super cheap, good *New Mexican* food! Get something with green chile in it to make Andy happy! MAHRgeritas are great!
Trappeze - The couple's first date spot! Great beer, amazing fries (& dipping sauces!), and very affordable!
Pulaski Heights BBQ - Anna's next-door neighbor! Really, if you go by, just yell Anna's name loud and maybe she'll come outside! Amazing BBQ, BYOB, and their ramen made the Food Network!
Cali 'N Titos - Very cheap, funky outdoor spot with amazing tacos, empanadas, and cuban sandwiches! BYOB for $2.
White Tiger Gourmet - Another Food Network feature! It's like a neighborhood cookout every day. Literally, tucked in one of Athens' prettiest historic neighborhoods, grab a loaded hotdog and have a seat at the red checkered picnic table outside! P.S. more than just hotdogs and very cheap.
Maepole - Cheap, fast, healthy, and fresh! Great outdoor space as well!
A little nicer dinner:
Seabear Oyster Bar - Great cocktails, cool vibe, oysters ($$ it's no Florida!), and good menu
The Pine - always good! Drew Mahr's favorite :) Plus, a fun bar in the basement "The Root"... great brunch as well!
Heirloom - great farm-to-table restaurant with nice patio. Amazing brunch! Of course, good lunch as well. Peter Mahr's favorite :)
Donna Changs - Intimate family-style asian cuisine (all shareable plates!). Amazing cocktails and if you stay late enough the staff will flip on the disco ball and craft you some drinks just for fun! Anna Mahr's favorite :)
The National - Spanish-style/Mediterranean restaurant with tapas and all kinds of good!
Creature Comforts - The most popular brewery downtown. You might recognize some of the beers that are frequent winners/in a grocery store near you!
Terrapin - Another Athens-based brewery that you might recognize from stores. Terrapin is known for its outdoor lawn.
Athentic Brewing - a self-service beer bar in "Normaltown"... a place to drink in and of itself! Just past downtown with a few cool bars of its own (The Old Pal, Normal Bar, Hi-Lo Lounge).
Rooftop - Go up to the rooftop of the Georgia Theatre for some cool views, good brews, and even some good food.
Blue Sky - Low-key rooftop bar downtown
Wonderbar - Bar + Video game hangout if you're into that!
Downtown - Walk around! Shop!
Farmers' Market - Saturday mornings at Bishop Park 8am-12pm.
Ciné - Catch a movie at our local theater downtown! Red carpet and a marquee and all!
Big Dogs on the River - If you're feeling adventurous, kayaking the Broad is always a good time!
Homewood Social - Upscale, small bowling alley with great food, craft beer, and cocktails.
Lumberjaxe - For the wild ones: throw some axes and drink some beer!
Karaoke - Split a karaoke room with some of your friends/family at Iron Factory (link to call restaurant and reserve ahead). Full restaurant/bar and wait staff available to karaoke room.
Silent Disco - Now at Highwire Lounge, 40 Watt, and Little Kings Shuffle Club. $2 headphones. Pro Tip: Take a water break from dancing and listen to the panting & singing of the crazy dancers in the silence!
Rook & Pawn - Bar, café, sandwiches, and snacks & GAMES! Pay $5 for unlimited access to their board game library and hang out as long as you want.
Bear Hollow Zoo - yep, Athens is so weird it has a little zoo. Alligators, bears, and bald eagles are definitely the highlights. Fun little nature walk and honestly, some cool animals in rehabilitation.
Botanical Gardens - A fun place to walk around, sit in some sunshine... lots of walking trails along Broad River and gardens! And an interactive play park for kids.
Still bored? Atlanta is an hour and a half away, lakes/boating an hour away, North Georgia mountains are close too!
