It all started back in 2013 at Menno Simons Christian School. Annah was in grade 5, Liam in grade 6 — her brother’s good friend. She thought he was tall, shy, and cute; he thought she was outgoing… maybe even a little crazy.
By junior high, Annah’s crush was impossible to hide. On a school trip to Quebec, she followed Liam around like a puppy — teasing him, pestering him, and doing all the little things that count as “flirting” when you’re twelve. What Annah didn’t know at the time was that Liam had a crush on her, too. The two of them were even in school plays together — and once, Annah was so distracted by watching Liam walk offstage that she completely missed her cue. Their crushes carried on all through junior high, but once Liam left Menno, they gradually lost touch — until the summer Annah graduated grade 9, when their paths crossed again and they started talking.
That November in 2017, Liam got dressed up, went to Annah’s dad, and asked for his blessing to date her. Not long after, Annah went to watch Liam play in a volleyball game at his school. Afterwards, the two went out for ice cream, where Liam officially asked her to be his girlfriend. Their first date was a Flames game — Annah was so nervous she couldn’t even bring herself to take a picture with him. They started their relationship young, growing together through high school and countless adventures — from Mexico mission trips (always separated in the vans for being “the couple”) to everyday moments that made them laugh until their stomachs hurt. And later, as they were writing this story together, Liam confessed that after that very first date, he actually said out loud to himself that he was going to marry Annah someday.
After three and a half years, life pulled them in different directions — Annah dove into nursing, while Liam traveled the world and built his career as a golf pro. For four years, they weren’t together, but they never fully stopped thinking about one another.
Then, in January 2024, everything shifted. Annah all of the sudden couldn’t get Liam out of her head. She and Jo spent countless nights after youth talking about him, wondering what it all meant. At the same time, half a world away in Australia, Liam realized on his trip that Annah was the one for him. He called her out of the blue, asked her out, and the spark was instant. By September, they were officially together again and both knew without a doubt — this was it.
After almost a year of dating, In August 2025, Liam planned the perfect proposal at Christina Lake. What Annah thought was a family birthday dinner turned into the biggest surprise of her life. After dinner, they went to the beach “for family photos.” When the others slipped away (actually hiding in the bushes), Liam read Annah a heartfelt letter as the sun set, pulled out a ring, and asked her to marry him. She said yes, of course — and was surprised yet again when Liam’s family had driven out to the lake to celebrate with them. In that moment, Liam’s words from years earlier came full circle: from their very first date, he had known he was going to marry Annah.
Now, they’re most excited simply to do life together: travel, adventure, and soak up every little moment side by side.
