Our Wedding

Annie and Scott met on the first day of Winter Quarter 2011, in “EDS 122 - Teaching and Learning Science". After taking a random seat in the classroom of 15 students, Annie cordially introduced herself to Scott, decided he was attractive, found herself feeling&nbsp;shy&nbsp;for the first time in her life and resolved to sit on the other side of the room for the rest of the quarter. This was a project-based class where the professor assigned all of the groups every day--&nbsp;it was a matter of time before they would&nbsp;interact again. After six weeks of class, Scott had established himself as a physics undergrad with an adept ability to speak publicly and Annie mostly kept to herself and her ecology journal. Their professor finally placed them to a project group together and assigned the class challenge of building a top that spun the longest. Scott set to work with models having to do with angular momentum and Annie went straight into building through trial and error. 30 minutes later, Scott had molded a proto-driedle out of Play-Doh and Annie had built a small paper plate UFO. She didn’t really understand the theoretical physics of it. But the UFO spun for a minute and a half before gently slowing to a stop and Annie found herself grinning as the rest of the class watched in awe. Scott knew he had to talk to this girl again. Four weeks,&nbsp;several study sessions (which, as it turns out, Scott didn't&nbsp;really need to study), a trip to the Birch Aquarium (where Annie unabashedly explained the differences between&nbsp;tentacles, pseudopods, and legs) and&nbsp;walks to-and-from class later, Annie and Scott decided to call it a thing.&nbsp;

How We Met

Years passed.&nbsp;Britain left the EU.&nbsp;&nbsp;Curiosity&nbsp;made it to Mars.&nbsp;Adele said “Hello” after a multi-year hiatus.&nbsp;LeBron went back to the Cavs. 11 Marvel Cinematic&nbsp;Universe movies were released.Voyager&nbsp;entered interstellar space.&nbsp; Scott was in a bit of a bind.&nbsp; Annie wanted to be surprised, but as is customary in Vietnamese tradition, they had already received the blessing of both their families to be married! Determined to keep Annie on her toes, he initiated his plan while simultaneously creating several red herrings to distract her. The first red herring was a trip to San Diego, their old stomping grounds, to some of the places they went as they were just getting to know each other.The second, weeks later, was to see the snowy peaks of Tahoe, and try their luck on the slopes - exciting and adventurous, and certainly scenic. Finally, they planned to see a Cirque du Soleil performance, Crystal, a circus performance on ice that was filled with beauty and grace. All of these picturesque venues served as the perfect opportunity for Scott to spring&nbsp;his trap. Annie waited in anticipation as they went and returned from San Diego and Tahoe. "What is he waiting for?!" By now she was convinced it would happen at the Cirque show - but no, two days before, Scott hit the lights at the least expected time, the middle of Coach Nguyen's Badminton practice. With Annie's favorite song playing in the background and a ton of her kids (already in on it) circling her, Scott in a brand new suit (with bow-tie!) walked in with all of her closest colleagues,&nbsp;took a knee, and asked his girl to go steady for life.

Traditions

Are you having a traditional Vietnamese wedding?

We will be having a tea ceremony at Annie's parents' home the morning of the wedding. This is an intimate event and though we wish we could invite everyone, her parents' home can only hold so many. You will however experience some of the&nbsp;Viet wedding traditions in the evening, including the 10-course banquet menu, Annie's costume change into her red ao dai, and copious amounts of cognac as the bride and groom greet their guests table-by table.

What's appropriate for gifting?

We are thrilled to be able to celebrate with our friends and family, so your presence is present enough! If you would&nbsp;like to give a gift, we would be grateful if you would consider&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_Vietnamese_wedding#Traditional_Vietnamese_wedding_gifts" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">traditional Vietnamese red envelope</a>&nbsp;to help us get closer to our goal of buying a home. Will there be Jewish elements to the celebrations?

10-Course Traditional&nbsp;Vietnamese Banquet: COME&nbsp;HUNGRY! We even dare to say, come in a fasted state-- there's going to be a lot of food!&nbsp;Courses are shared family style at each table. If you have a severe allergy to a listed ingredient, please let us know.

Special Seafood Cold Plate&nbsp;&nbsp; (Typically different types of deli cold cuts, along with cocktail shrimp,&nbsp; chilled jellyfish, and Vietnamese steamed pork loaf)

















Asparagus and Crabmeat Soup&nbsp;&nbsp; (A similar consistency to egg flower soup) 

















Special Shrimp Paste in Two Styles&nbsp;&nbsp; (Fried and steamed. Trust us, it's good.) 

















Vegetable Stir-Fry&nbsp;in Bird's Nest&nbsp;&nbsp; (By bird's nest, they fancifully mean fried noodles.&nbsp;&nbsp; Vegetable stir-fry is then nested in the middle)

















House Special Lobster with E-fu Noodles&nbsp;&nbsp; (This is the main event, are you ready?! Watch Annie masterfully scrape&nbsp;every morsel off the shell possible with chopsticks--that is, if she's even around&nbsp;to eat it.) 

















Peking Duck with Steamed Buns&nbsp;&nbsp; (A childhood favorite of Annie's--&nbsp; make a little sandwich with&nbsp;the buns and don't forget the sauce!) 

















Fried Fish with Spicy Garlic Sauce&nbsp;&nbsp; (This dish sealed the deal for us when we were venue hunting.&nbsp;&nbsp; It's as good as it sounds.) 

















Golden Sea Fried Rice&nbsp;&nbsp; (The house fried rice-- yes, there's seafood in here, too.) 

















Mung Bean Pudding and Wedding Cake&nbsp;&nbsp; (Vietnamese cuisine does not have a lot of pastries--&nbsp; instead, many&nbsp; desserts are made from sweetened beans and served cold.&nbsp;&nbsp; Wedding cake will be vanilla chiffon&nbsp;cake with strawberries and&nbsp;vanilla buttercream frosting.)
