Where to Stay

Picture of Where to Stay

I have had great luck with using Booking.com to book all of my hotel stays in Greece, I highly recommend this website. The website allows free cancellations and has no hidden fees. You can reserve your room months in advance and don't have to pay until you get there. Hotels.com is also a similar site that is recommended. There is always the option to book directly through your hotel of choice via the hotel's website or by phone.

When you arrive in Sifnos, you will arrive at the ferry port in Kamares, which is a large tourist area of the island that has restaurants, cafes, bars and stores. From here, there are always buses and taxis available to take you to your final destination in Sifnos. The wedding will be in the Southeastern region of the island in a beach village called Platis Gialos. The bus ride from the ferry port to Platis Gialos is 30-45 minutes with stops, and even shorter by taxi. There are many hotels, B&B's, villas, and apartments for stay in this and the surrounding areas. Hotels close to the wedding venues that I would recommend are listed below. Another fun and adventurous mode of transportation on Sifnos is by Vespa, they are also a great way to explore the island.

Getting to Sifnos

Picture of Getting to Sifnos

The best way to get to Sifnos is by boat. In fact, unless you can afford a helicopter, it is the only way to get to Sifnos. The ferry ride is a short (2.5 hours) and enjoyable ride from Athens. The ferries have both air-conditioned indoor and covered/uncovered outdoor areas. I am a big fan of sunbathing on the outdoor decks on the ferries. There are usually snacks available for purchase. ***Some of these ferries are fast and turbulent, please be prepared if you are prone to motion sickness.

There are two ports in Athens, and the Port of Pireaus is where you board a ferry to Sifnos. Do not book tickets for the other port, Rafina, as these ferry lines will not take you to Sifnos. If you take a taxi to the port, just tell the driver you are going to Sifnos, he will know where to take you. Allow enough time to arrive at the port at least 60 minutes before the ferry's departure.

Buy your tickets in advance if you can. If you book your hotel through an agency you can ask them to book your ferry tickets too and they will be waiting in an envelope for you when you arrive at your Athens hotel or the airport. You can also purchase ferry tickets at the port on the day of departure, but booking them in advance will save you the trouble of trying to find or understand the ferry schedules.

It would be reasonable to plan for arrival in Sifnos at least one day before the wedding, on June 20th. It is not mandatory to depart from Athens, you can also get to Sifnos from other islands if you are traveling throughout Greece before the wedding, but you will need to check the ferry schedules. A reliable and fairly priced website that I have found for booking ferry tickets is www.ferryconnection.com. Other websites for purchasing ferry tickets include www.ferriesingreece.com, www.directferries.com

Once you get to Sifnos, there are several modes of transportation that you may choose from. Taxi's and buses are always available. Rental cars and ATV's are also available on Sifnos. Websites you can use for rentals include www.expedia.com and www.protomotocar.gr/ . Other useful websites for renting are listed below. My personal favorite way to travel around the islands in Greece are by motorcycle/vespa.

**Transportation will be provided to you between the wedding ceremony and reception, and back.
