What is a Latin Mass?

A Latin Mass (or Tridentine Mass) is the solemn and reverent form of liturgical worship that was celebrated by Roman Catholics worldwide for many centuries. It is conducted (as the name would imply) primarily in Latin and is characterized by reverent and elaborate movements, multiple ancient prayers, grand musical pieces, as well as several periods of silence. While the Latin Mass will look very foreign to a first time attendee, it is designed to emphasize reverence towards God and creates a sense of sacredness and continuity with past generations.

Why did you choose a Latin Mass wedding?

We were both very fortunate to have grown up attending the Latin Mass (Alex was an altar boy and Arianna sang in the choir) and even more fortunate to have fallen in love with its rich ceremonies in our adulthood. The two of us realized early on in our relationship that we both wanted to center our marriage around our shared values including our love for the Latin Mass. Having a Solemn Latin Nuptial Mass is the best way that we can imagine starting our married lives together.

How should I act during the Latin Mass?

If this is your first time attending a Latin Mass, then welcome! Know that you are in good company and are welcome to follow along with all of the sitting, kneeling, and standing movements. Watch and take in the splendor of this incredibly beautiful and elaborate ceremony that has been the center of Catholic life for centuries. If you are comfortable praying, then please quietly offer up your prayers to God alongside our prayers and know that we will be praying for all of you on this beautiful occasion.

May I go up to receive Communion?

There will be one part of the Mass where you will see everyone stand to go up towards the altar to receive the Holy Eucharist. If you are Catholic and in a State of Grace, then please join the lines and receive Communion. If you are not Catholic and/or not in good standing with the Church, then we ask you to please remain seated out of respect for our belief in the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

How do I receive Communion in a Latin Mass?

Communion is distributed by the priest and will only be given to recipients on the tongue. Come forward and kneel (if you are able to) along the altar step with everyone else. When the priest comes to you, tilt your head back, open your mouth and stick out your tongue slightly. The priest will place the Eucharist on your tongue whilst saying a short prayer. This prayer (translated from the Latin) is, “May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve your soul unto life everlasting. Amen.” There is no need for you to respond with "amen."

But wait! I have more questions!

Please feel free to contact Alex at 907-521-5549 or Arianna at 907-332-3377 with any other questions. We look forward to seeing you all on October 11th!
