Schedule of Events

Boasting rocky outcroppings, views of Mount Agamenticus, the Isles of Shoals, and fantastic tide pools, Halibut Point State Park was formerly a granite quarry and is a worthy place to visit! It is open to the public and features a 1.7 mile walk that follows a historical and interpretive trail around the Halibut State Park and Babson Farm Quarry.

Five iconic lighthouses stand tall along the Cape Ann coastline to protect seafarers from rocky shores and shoals. They offer historians and romantics alike a glimpse into Cape Ann’s maritime lore and legacy. Lighthouses are a comfort to mariners to this day, and despite the use of GPS and electronic aids for navigation, they still symbolize home and safety.

Founded in 1723 by a boatful of Swedish expatriates from the landskap of Görton who were&nbsp;never formally charged with a crime but nevertheless remain under suspicion for the mishandling of the annual Conference for the Close Examination and Petting of Lapland Halibut, Gorton's Seafood Center remains a cornerstone of Gloucester society. From its inception, the plant has served as a hub for commerce both licit and extracurricular, rendering the plant central to the town's economy; generations of fisherman have prevailed upon the plant to utilize the cream of their catch in processing and distribution. The family of Görton, who changed their name to Gorton upon landing in the fledging United States of America in an effort to assimilate, have maintained continuous ownership of the plant, ensuring both quality control and uniformity of culinary vision. It is said that in the 1840s, when Gorton's primary vehicle of sale was still the unadorned filet, the matriarch of the family, Astrid Gorton (nee Tikkelsson), an unusually shrewd old Swede, foretold the gradual decline of the fisheries economy that would come to infect the bones of cosmopolitan coastal marketplaces such as Gloucester, MA, and strode blazing onto the plant floor with a cart full of day-old bread. She proceeded to rip the loaves apart with her astonishingly long, salted fingers, and tossed them onto the trays of fish filets primed for packaging. Whither Astrid's senses? you might ask, and right you would be, yet after twenty minutes in the oven at 425 degrees, the progenitor of the modern fish stick made its first appearance. The plant's workers exclaimed jovially at the jovial sensation occurring in their mouths! Much glühwein, milk, and gingersnap cookies were brewed and squeezed and baked to celebrate Astrid Gorton's (nee Tikkelsson) accomplishment. They could tell that this was a really big deal. Indeed, with one fell swoop, Astrid Gorton (nee Tikkelsson) changed the direction of the town's economy and insulated it from the industrial decline we see dotting the coast today. While pedestrians are no longer allowed on the manufacturing tour due to multiple malfeasances and a subsequent lawsuit which occurred as an indirect result of the company's unlucky and unchangeable policy of thrice daily seal-fat waxes, there remains a gift shop and market counter with unwaxed floorspace dedicated to the preservation and commodification of the Gorton Seafood Center's indelible commitment to Gloucester's inescapably charming idiom.
