If you are taking advantage of the holiday weekend and are looking to explore the area, we have some recommendations for you!
The venue and recommended hotels for Saturday are about 35 mins from downtown DC.
If you want to explore the city we highly recommend using public transportation, and walking around! DC is a very walkable city and the Metro is easy to use, expansive, and pretty clean for public transport.
We would recommend driving to the Huntington Metro Station (free parking on weekends) and riding the metro in, or a similar station. If you do decide to drive in, I would recommend looking up parking ahead of time, there is always stuff happening in the city and you never know when a street block will be closed off.
If you want to explore the national mall, and all the free Smithsonian museums, this metro line (the yellow line) can drop you off right there (Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter or L'enfant stations). If you have never seen the monuments, we highly recommend them. Bring your walking shoes!
Note from Krista: I would recommend the Archives station because there are more food + drink options north of the mall. I would recommend the L'enfant station if you want to change metro lines. There are food trucks along the mall if you get hungry but I find them overpriced - better to visit a local establishment
Other fun neighborhoods we like: The Wharf & Navy-Yard (might be able to catch a baseball or soccer game this time of year, lots of food and brunch spots), Georgetown (lots of shopping and good food) Adams Morgan + Dupont Circle (more nightlife scene)
If you don't want to go all the way into the city, just up the road is Old Town Alexandria (25 mins from Woodbridge). Old town Alexandria is a historic area, founded in 1749! Stroll down King Street and end up at the waterfront. There are quaint shops, bars and more food options than necessary)
