It all started with the COVID-19 pandemic in the summer of 2020. Mitch received his mission call to Japan despite having no prior connections to the country. During the nine weeks of home missionary training on zoom, he became very close to several other missionaries, including one whom he would end up being companions with later in California. Mitch finished his mission there, but all the other missionaries went to Japan, where a few of them met Asha, who was serving in the Japan Kobe mission.
Fast forward to 2023, when both Mitch and Asha started winter semester at BYU. The very first time they met was in a hot tub celebrating one of these mission friends' birthday on January 28. However, Asha had been set up with Mitch's former companion from his time in missionary training, so only a few words were exchanged and she was known to Mitch only as one of his best friend's very cute date.
Over the next few weeks they hung out together several more times with the friend group, slowly seeing more of each other. They really got to know each other when Asha got invited to a weekend trip to Mitch's family's cabin in Island Park. She later found out that Mitch's brother Luke was impressed by her and had remarked, "she is wife material," to which Mitch (who was equally impressed) could only agree.
The next week was a turning point; while wrapping spring rolls together at a friend's house, Asha really got to know Mitch for the first time and realized there was more to him than she had initially thought. Mitch started to get excited when he realized she might be available after all. After watching Mitch embarrass himself at karaoke and then staying up talking until 6:30am, Asha decided she wanted get to know him more.
Asha was nervous, but after some convincing from her older brother she decided to ask Mitch on a date (although he didn't realize it was a date at the time), and they had a wonderful time visiting the biblical tabernacle replica and eating tacos.
Things got a little complicated when Mitch hit it off with another girl at the same time. For the next few months they continued getting to know each other better and dating other people.
Eventually Mitch came back and asked for a second chance. By that time the couple only had a week together before Asha went home to Washington for the entire summer, and they spent every second together that they could.
A week into FaceTiming, calling, and texting every day, they decided they wanted to be officially dating despite the difficulty of long distance.
After a long summer which included 2 trips to see each other they finally got to spend a semester together. Day by day, they talked more and more about a future together and realized that they didn't want to be without one another.
In early 2024, Mitch surprised Asha with a ring at the very same cabin they had first gotten to know each other the year before.
They are beyond excited to start a life together and continue to learn and grow for the rest of eternity.
