Ashleigh's Story

When I was little, I used to pray about the person I wanted to end up with. I prayed he would be kind, handsome, and most importantly of all, that he would have a strong relationship with the Lord. I first met Spencer in fourth grade, although I do not remember this meeting. He seemed to fit right in with the class, so I did not take note when the new boy was introduced in Mrs. Meunier’s class at Jacksonville Elementary School. We grew up alongside each other, and though I had known him for so long, I never realized I was growing up with my husband. I always thought of Spencer as the kind, athletic boy, someone who could be counted on. We were never really friends, nor did we spend any time together from grade to grade. It wasn’t until senior year of high school, during our AP Literature class we had any sort of connection at all. Even then, he was just the fun boy who sat behind me. In my own mind, I thought of Spencer as one of South’s popular kids, so being with him never once crossed my mind; it simply wasn’t an option in the high school hierarchy of things, as I saw it. As many of you know, Spencer and I did not have a normal graduation. In the craze of Covid, one of the few graduation traditions we got to take part in, was driving by our old schools and waving to our old teachers, friends, and family members, and because we had attended the same schools, Spencer and I were placed on the same bus. Spencer, naturally, was in charge of the hype music. I remember he specifically played “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus because he thought that was a song I would like. After the bus ride, as we were all piling off the bus, I told him “See ya at the 10 year reunion!” Spencer got a funny look on his face, agreed, and walked away. I thought I had weirded him out, which was a bummer, because I had enjoyed chatting with him in AP Lit. When Spencer reached out to me two years later via Instagram, I was pleasantly surprised. We messaged each other all during Thanksgiving, and agreed to meet up early the next day for coffee. Neither of us knew what we were going to be; at the time, neither of us even considered it a date. Over a year later, and Spencer is still pleasantly surprising me. Over 10 years later, and I discover the man I’ve been praying for has been unseen by my side all along. The Lord has answered my prayers above and beyond my wildest hopes, and I am beyond honored to have such a tenacious and joyful partner.

Spencer’s Story

Growing up I often wondered who my future wife was going to be. My childhood imagination pictured a beautiful woman, who was intelligent, wise, strong, patient, and kind. I didn’t know the Lord then. However, I valued that wonderful, divine gift that was marriage. I met Ashleigh in Mrs. Meunier’s class at Jacksonville Elementary School. In fact, we sat at the same table group. I remember how much taller Ashleigh was compared to the rest of the class, and how amazingly smart she was as well. There were many times I recall Ashleigh being recognized in front of the entire school for her academic performance. Even then, I knew Ashleigh was going to be successful in any avenue she pursued. After Elementary school, we didn’t see each other again until our 8th grade leadership team at Mcloughlin Middle School. After our leadership class, I didn’t see her until AP literature with Dr. Schuler. Following AP literature, Ashleigh was on my graduation team. Then, the subsequent summer after graduation we ran into each other at least once a month when I was on my first prevailing wage job at Pilot Rock Excavation. The reason I give this list of illustrations is because it was these moments in my life where either a new chapter began, or certain classes required effort, and teamwork. With this stated, Ashleigh has always been on my team. Cheering for me, supporting me, and helping me. It is such a blessing that now we will soon be a marriage team and that the Lord has given me the gift of loving her. A quick Epilogue to portray how much I adored Ashleigh, was the time I went golfing with Lawson Bright. Lawson asked me the question, “If you were to marry anybody right now from high school who would it be?” With little hesitation, I exclaimed, “Ashleigh Scheuneman.” This was June 6, 2022.
