Ashley and Roman’s story begins just as you might expect: with volleyball. Two volleyball players met and competed against each other at a New Year’s tournament in Bowling Green. Roman walked into the building, saw Ashley, and thought to himself, “I like what I see. Let’s find out more.” He quickly learned that Ashley was not only a great volleyball player but also a fierce defensive competitor. During the tournament, Roman noticed that the organizers seemed to be playing matchmaker—trying to set Ashley up with another guy. So, for the time being, Roman sat back and observed. After the tournament, there was a New Year’s Eve get-together at the organizers’ house. Roman was slightly intoxicated, and after a night of board games, table games, and cheers, everyone was tired and ready to call it a night. Roman looked over his shoulder and saw Ashley sitting on top of the stove. Out of nowhere, he decided to strike up a conversation. Since Roman is writing this story, he’ll admit that he doesn’t remember what the first question was—or the next few, for that matter. But what he does remember is that Ashley’s answers made him pause. She could carry a meaningful conversation, and their views on life seemed to align. In the business world, people call this “good synergy.” At the end of the evening, Roman sent Ashley a message through a messenger app that simply said: “Here’s my number for future business inquiries.” Their first date was in the Germantown neighborhood of Nashville. The food was just “mid,” but Ashley’s company and conversation were absolutely delicious. After the date, Roman and Ashley continued texting, but Roman wasn’t entirely sure if he was prepared to dive all in. At the time, he was caught between switching careers, deciding whether to fully pursue volleyball or lean into a professional career, and figuring out if he even wanted a serious relationship. Understandably, Ashley was in a similar boat—finishing semesters of nursing school, playing for WKU volleyball, coaching club ball, and helping with recruiting. Time was a precious commodity for both, and both were determined to succeed in their professional endeavors. One evening, Ashley was coaching at a tournament where her team performed poorly. Through her texts, Roman could tell she wasn’t happy. He also knew she’d be driving through Louisville on her way back to Bowling Green, so he texted: “Do you feel like you could use a drink?” Ashley replied: “Yes, But not too long. I have to get home.” They met up at a whiskey bar in Louisville called Trouble Bar. Roman ordered a flight of whiskeys, and after the first few pours, he made a decision—to completely open up. He presented to Ashley everything that he was, everything that he wasn’t, everything he thought he would be, his past failures, and his hopes. At the end, he said: “If this scares you, if it turns you away, or makes you uncertain about me, then right now would be the best time to exit and not look back.” Ashley looked at Roman with her infinitely deep, ocean-blue eyes and replied: “I’m not here for who you were, what you did, or what material things you have or don’t have. I’m here for who you are, and I’ll support whoever you want to be.” That was the moment Roman knew Ashley was the one. As the night came to a close, Ashley sobered up, and Roman walked her to her car to make sure she left safely. Before she left, they looked at each other, and Roman said: “What I’m about to do is going to feel magical.” And then they shared the best kiss ever. Family has always been important to Ashley, and for her, Roman’s love for her family was just as important as her love for Roman. After her graduation from WKU—which both her immediate family and Roman attended—Roman had the chance to meet her family for the first time. At the family’s Airbnb after the ceremony, Roman found himself in what felt like a wartime interrogation: deep questions about his intentions and motivations with Ashley. It was then that Roman discovered the girl he was dating was none other than a princess of Morris, Illinois—a town where, for over a hundred years, her family had built a notorious reputation, one that nobody dared to mess with. Fast forward two years—give or take a few months—Roman had traveled to Ashley’s hometown several times, meeting about 150 members of her family, while Ashley had met a whopping 25 members of Roman’s. By the end of 2024, as Roman was finishing his master’s in Business Analytics, he had secured a great job and realized his relationship with Ashley had blossomed into something he wanted to last forever. So, after asking Ashley’s parents for her hand in marriage, he proposed the day after his graduation ceremony, in front of both of their families. Today, Ashley and Roman live happily in Louisville, Kentucky. Roman is a respected volleyball official and procurement professional. Ashley is an ICU trauma float pool nurse at the University of Kentucky Hospital, in pursuit to start her PhD to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. In all matters of their lives, they value Jesus and follow Him faithfully. They believe in living a traditional, simple life—one where respect, hard work, and consistency for the greater good lead to a bountiful life on earth and in eternity. They are blessed to have hundreds of people they call family and are honored to invite you to join them in celebrating a life of love, respect, and matrimony.
