Our story began with a dating app, but the wheels were already in motion for our story to unfold. Aubrey grew up in Clintonville, Wisconsin and after college bought a house in New London. She lived there for several years and decided she wanted to upgrade and buy a house out in the country. Due to her remote job she had lots of options and fell in love with a renovated country home located in Medford, Wisconsin. Aubrey did not know anyone in Medford and this was hours away from her family, but something just felt right. Meanwhile, Eric had graduated college recently, and had been working construction and devoting lots of time to moving up the chain in the National Guard, and had taken a prolonged break from dating. Aubrey closed on her house in Medford on February 28th and matched with Eric just two months later. We were both apprehensive, but figured, what the heck, and had a first date after talking for a few weeks.

Our first date involved a walk, making homemade pizza, hours of talking, and a movie (Paul Blart: Mall Cop to be specific). Before the night was over, we both suspected that this was more than just a meaningless date. We saw each other multiple times that same week and Aubrey joked about not getting too comfortable as she was going to leave on a month-long trip. At the time it didn’t seem important, but by the time the trip came along, it definitely mattered. Aubrey had planned a several week trip out west to do a bunch of races and check out several states. We made it official right as Aubrey left and figured that this would be our test. Fortunately, that time apart only strengthened our bond, and on Aubrey‘s return we exchanged I love you’s. From that time on our love has blossomed and deepened through all life has thrown our way. From job changes, to car accidents, to month-long National Guard trainings, we have actively chose each other.

In February, Eric planned an ice fishing excursion, Aubrey’s first time going. Eric caught a fish and then handed Aubrey the tackle box asking her to pick out a new bait. When Aubrey opened the box the ring was inside and Eric was down on a knee. Ice fishing wasn’t quite as exciting after that but certainly memorable!
