Both born and raised in Guatemala, lived most of our lives just a 20min ride away but had to travel all the way to Cincinnati OH to finally meet. And what really brought us together, our interest in science, we visited his lab and had our first brunch date after that even though neither one of us knew that was the first date. After a long talking stage, a semester in Ecuador and many FaceTime calls we met up in one of our visits to Guatemala where we officially started dating and knew right then that there was no going back.
As luck would have it, Azu's host family were also the parents of one of Guillermo's best friends from high school, so picking her up from their house felt familiar to him but in a whole new way... One of Guillermo's many theories in life is the importance of being able to eat messy food without making a mess. Maybe not the best first date idea, but they had birria tacos and they came out on the other side squeaky clean. A strange but yet perfect sign for their compatibility.
For the engagement, Guillermo had planned a romantic dinner, but Azu was under the impression they were going to celebrate his grad school graduation with his friends (perfect excuse to get dressed up). Guillermo had the help of friends and families to go along with the plan and decorating the room at E&O Kitchen, a restaurant Azu loved. Once they were there and Azu realized what was happening, she barely touched her food and instead starting making all the phone calls sharing the news.
