In the early 1900s, Palm Springs started to become a destination for health and healing due to the dry, hot climate and natural hot springs. In the 1930s, Palm Springs became a glamorous desert getaway for Hollywood stars. Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, and Desi Arnaz all made the area a second home. Much of Palm Springs still embodies this mid-century architecture. Today, the area remains popular as a destination for relaxing at resorts, hiking in the surrounding national and state parks, and world-class golfing.
