It didn't take much convincing to make Colin fall in love with Bea's hometown, and now they're lucky to call Porto their home.
There are cobbled streets, historic bridges, beautiful beaches and lots of Port wine glasses clinking ;)
Here are some suggestions to make your trip even better:
Explore both levels of the bridge for the different river views. On the upper level, watch for passing metro trains (Bea's saved Colin from two near misses). Pro tip: To make sure you get to the upper level of the bridge set your map to "Av. Vimara Peres"
If you cross Dom Luís bridge into Gaia you will come across this garden, which will likely be filled with people having a glass of wine while listening to live music during the sunset. We recommend you bring a blanket to sit comfortably on the grass and enjoy the river views!
The Pergola is a Porto icon. This is a great spot to contemplate the Atlantic and have a nice walk near the beach.
This park has gorgeous views of the river, beautiful gardens and as a bonus, you can see peacocks!
This park has a little of everything. It has a Tree-Top walk, a tea house and a contemporary art museum! You can also book one of their night tours called "Há luz no Parque".
This park is one of the largest urban parks in Portugal covering about 83 hectares! It has different entrances and you can go from the Boavista area to Matosinhos beach!
Clérigos Tower is a beautiful baroque church with a tower you can climb for some great views of the city
This train station will take your breath away. It's covered in beautiful tiles that recount historical events that happened in the north of Portugal.
Casa da Música is a concert hall, where you can watch concerts or visit for an architectural tour.
Serralves Museum (Located in Serralves Park) is considered one of the best contemporary art museum in Europe.
Igreja de São Francisco is a 15th-century Gothic church right next to the river. This church has intricate gold baroque interiors and you can also visit the catacombs underneath.
This Café has great views of the beach in Foz and it also has the best pastries in the city. You can't go wrong with your order but we recommend "Bola de Berlim", "Crumble de Ameixa" or any of their mini tarts.
Colin swears the best chicken and waffles
are made right here in this café in downtown Porto.
This brunch spot is right next to the river. We recommend their egg sandwich, Açaí bowls and Tapiocas.
Are we biased? Yes!
This is Bea's parents café/restaurant and if you want the best most authentic Portuguese food, then you'll have to come here.
(ps: if you come by on a Saturday Fernando will try to get you drunk, proceed with caution)
If you like seafood you'll be happy in Porto. This restaurant is located in "Matosinhos" and you'll notice that all around you there are countless other seafood restaurants. We recommend you try "Rodovalho" and "Lulas grelhadas".
If you've ever been to "Nando's" you've probably eaten a worse version of the Portuguese/South-African "Frango no Churrasco c/Piri-piri". Don't let the place intimidate you, all the best places are filled with old Portuguese men drinking a beer at the entrance!
If you're coming to Porto you'll have to eat a "Francesinha". Here you'll find a great one and some delicious Portuguese-style Hotdogs. Make sure you drink a "Super Bock" to have the complete experience!
Do You want to have the best pork sandwich of your life?
Come to Conga.
Bea thinks that leaving Portugal without trying Codfish should be a criminal offence. If you want to avoid legal troubles we would recommend you come here and order "Bacalhau à Maria Rita".
If Colin could be here all day every day he would. If you plan on coming here please invite him to join. (Our favourite Gelato flavours are: 'Tarte de limão', 'Morango', 'Bolacha Maria' and 'Amendoim'.)
Coming to Portugal means you'll try to eat your weight in "Pastéis de Nata". This pastry is by far our favourite and the best ones are here at Castro. ('Manteigaria' is a close second)
If you want the best pastries (croissants, cuca, bolas de berlim...) you have to come to brites. It's a little place with no tables, so you can take it to go and enjoy a nice walk near marquês.
Base is a great outdoor bar with beautiful views of the "Torre dos Clérigos", we recommend you bring a towel so you can sit in the grass and enjoy the sunset with a "Porto Tónico"
This bar is right in the downtown area and it has great food and cocktails. We recommend the "Privilege" cocktail!
If you want to have the best Moscow Mule of your life come here, and don't forget to add the extra foam.
