Ben was one of the first people that I met in Wichita after moving in August of 2013 for graduate school. After realizing that the overwhelming debt of grad school would be more stressful than filling my free time with a part time job, I decided to apply at a Pizza Hut near my apartment that advertised they were hiring. The application allowed me to select up to three stores in which I could apply, so I picked to send my application to two other Pizza Huts, one of which was the Pizza Hut that Ben managed. So I met Ben at an interview, an interview where I was the interviewee and he was the interviewer. After being hired on as a delivery driver, Ben and I worked with each other for about four and a half months before we began seeing each other outside of work. The evolution of our relationship included a lot of new relationship staples - mainly awkward Facebook conversations, Netflix, and Bud Light. After introducing our cats, Chloe and Jupiter, in March of 2014 and realizing that they were also inseparable, we knew that we were meant to be.
Ben proposed to me in May of 2016 after we had been together about two and a half years. We were vacationing in Colorado and spending the day with our friends Leslie and Tony, hiking in Estes Park. I thought that it was the altitude that was making Ben quiet and clammy as we climbed to the top of a mountain. Little did I know that he had something planned! After reaching the top and taking the standard touristy pictures next to the moutain's waterfall, I turned away to climb back down. Ben pulled me back, telling me that he loved me. Naturally I responded with "Love you too, but it's time to go." It wasn't until he got down on one knee that I realized what was going on. I was totally surprised and enthusiastically agreed to marry him. We were able to spend the next few days in Denver sharing the news with family and friends and celebrating our engagement. It was a better proposal than I ever could have imagined.
Now as we prepare to move to Salt Lake City for a year in addition to planning our wedding, I find myself loving Ben more all of the time. We are so excited to share our special day with all of our family in friends in Vegas, and I am so excited to be able to spend my life with my Pizza Hut boss, co-Netflix binger, perfect partner in life.
I was slaving away slinging pizzas and generally making poor life decisions. The restaurant became short staffed on drivers one summer. In the blur of many applications that were hardly qualified to dress in the morning, Katie stuck out. She had applied at a different store, but I saw her application first. Someone who had experience with food service, consistent job history, and a degree from a fancy college? Katie was so overqualified that setting up an interview seemed like a no-brainer.
If I wanted to be cliché, I would say it was love at first sight. When she showed up, Katie was beautiful, and I really thought one of my weird employees would scare her off or try to get with her.
After a few months, I somehow didn't scare her off, but I did try to get with her. As a true romantic, for our first date, I took her to a gourmet, independent delicatessen. Well, I took her to Barn'rds. It's a sandwich place. They have fantastic french fries. Eventually, I figured out that I wanted to actually impress her and stepped my game up. I introduced Katie to sushi and showed her most of what Wichita has to offer.
Life happened pretty quickly. Katie helped me quit smoking. We bought a house. We got a dog. The dog destroyed the house. We have lived The American Dream!
Now we are getting married! I proposed to Katie in Colorado. She said yes.
