✈️ Canadian Guests Travel Guide – Ireland
We’re so excited to have our family traveling from Ontario to Ireland for our wedding! To help make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here’s everything Beth and Kyle recommend.
⏰ Time Zone Tips
Ireland is 5 hours ahead of Ontario, Canada:
On the way there: You’ll “lose” almost a full day due to travel and time difference. Plan for some rest upon arrival.
On the way back: You’ll return “on the same day” for many hours — great for reflecting on the trip, but pace yourself!
💡 Flight Tip: Beth swears by compression socks — they’ve literally changed her life on long flights. Super comfy and keeps your legs feeling fresh!
📱 Must-Have Travel Apps
1. Airalo – Affordable eSIM phone plans. For traveling across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, choose the EU + UK plan. Beth can provide a link and coupon code if you want.
2. Wise – The best way to handle money abroad. Pre-download it, get a debit card, or use Apple Pay. Usually provides a much better exchange rate than cash conversions. Beth can share setup info if you’re interested.
3. Translink Planner – Essential for public transportation in Northern Ireland. Provides real-time bus and train schedules.
💱 Currency Tips
South of Ireland: Euros (€)
North of Ireland: Pounds (£)
Wedding Venue: Beth and Kyle’s wedding will be in Northern Ireland, so pounds will be used.
Tip: Wise app is usually better than exchanging physical cash, but if you do bring Canadian dollars, smaller currency exchange offices often give better rates than banks.
🚗 Renting a Car
Book early — prices rise closer to travel dates.
Drive on the left-hand side and be prepared for stick shift cars.
Roads can be windy and hilly, so take your time. Beth gets car sick, so consider your comfort!
Weather: Even in summer, it rains often. Bring a light rain jacket — showers are usually brief, then the sun comes out.
🛬 Flights & Getting Around
Preferred Airline: Aer Lingus — great service and puts you in the Irish atmosphere before you land.
Toronto Travel Tip: Beth likes taking VIA Rail from Sarnia to Toronto to avoid driving in the city, and then the UP Express to Pearson Airport — convenient and stress-free, especially when jetlagged.
Public Transport: Armagh and larger cities are accessible, but rural areas have fewer buses and little to no Uber service.

✈️ Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) for Travel to Ireland / Northern Ireland
All Canadian guests will need to review entry requirements before traveling.
If you’re flying into Dublin (Republic of Ireland):
Canadian citizens do not need a visa or ETA for short stays (up to 90 days). You’ll just need a valid passport for the duration of your trip. Most guests will likely fly into Dublin and travel north to Armagh (about 1 hour 20 minutes by car).
If you’re flying directly into Belfast (Northern Ireland, part of the UK):
Canada is part of the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. Canadian travelers will need to apply for an ETA before entering the UK, even for short stays.
The ETA is quick and easy to apply for online through the official UK government website and usually processed within a few days. It’s valid for multiple trips over 2 years or until your passport expires.
Tip:
If you’re unsure where you’ll land, it’s safest to get the UK ETA just in case — especially if your travel plans include crossing between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland during your trip.
✨ Extra Travel Tips
Pack Smart: Layers, comfortable shoes, and a rain jacket are essential.
Adapters: Ireland uses Type G plugs (three rectangular prongs).
Tipping: Appreciated but not mandatory (~10% in restaurants).
Jet Lag Tips: Stay hydrated, try to adjust your sleep schedule beforehand, and get sunlight upon arrival.
Plan Ahead: Check bus routes, car rentals, or taxis in advance, especially if exploring rural areas.
