The Blackwater Creek Trail is one of the most popular trails in the city. Following along the winding Blackwater Creek and built along an abandoned railway bed, this 3-mile paved trail is perfect for jogging, walking, or biking. The trail travels through a lovely urban forest, and is intersected at various points with earthen trails that allow visitors to delve deeper into the forested area and enjoy the many plants and wildlife species inhabiting it.
Percival’s Island is a familiar landmark in downtown Lynchburg. The island is approximately one and one-half miles long. The old railroad bed is now a paved, maintained hiking/biking trail that traverses the length of the island. The park is maintained in its natural state as a haven for plants and animals. There are many spots where the James River is accessible and fishing is permitted in accordance with State of Virginia fishing regulations.
One of the most popular trails is all of Virginia is the strenuous climb up to the rocky summit of Sharp Top Mountain (3,875 feet), This peak has attracted hikers for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. This 3.3-mile out-and-back trail near Lynchburg, Virginia is generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 15 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, camping, and hiking.
The Devil's Marbleyard is a 3-mile hike located in the James River Face Wilderness area as part of the Belfast Trail. The marbleyard is a unique geological feature that is considered a challanging (but rewarding) hike.
