His side of the story:

" 'Twas the beginning of my sophomore year of college and my first year as an RA, and I noticed this cute freshman who was on the women's lacrosse team who happened to live in the basement of my building. Now as part of my RA duties, I was obligated to hang out in the basement lounge for a few hours every week, and during this time, I would have the chance to make casual conversation with that same freshman women's lacrosse player. Her name was (and I guess still is) Brittany, and during that time I found out that her favorite number was six and that she was a nerd (like me) who was able to skip her freshman year of college. Over time, we started a competition where every time we saw each other, we'd face off in a battle of rock paper scissors, just as a way to say hi and chat (just for the record, I won the best of 19 series, 10-9)."

"As Christmas rolled around, my RA staff members were asking me what I wanted as my gift, and admittedly strangely, I said the first thing that came to mind: a single cashew in a Ziploc bag. Wouldn't ya know, one Wednesday afternoon when I was walking to my second-floor room, I saw a cashew inside of a bag, taped to the door with a note from Britt, and we started messaging each other that same day. About a month later after a casual lacrosse "date" and watching Jumanji, I asked to make this a thing and we've been a thing ever since."
