It was Friday, March 5, 2021. I was in between patients, casually scrolling through Hinge, when I saw a side profile that made me pause. In my head, I thought, "Who is THAT?" Naturally, I clicked on his profile. He had a great smile, loved to travel like I did, and had a playful energy that came through even in a few short lines. Then I saw the question on his profile: “Martin or Fresh Prince?” Without hesitation, I sent him a rose and replied “Fresh Prince.” And that simple answer turned into the beginning of our forever.

Now if you ask Lonnie, he’ll tell you he was teaching online that day when the rose popped up. His exact words? “A rose? WHO is this? …Oh, she bad.” And just like that, we started talking.

Even though our schedules were a little crazy, we stayed in constant communication. Three weeks later—on Friday, March 26, 2021—we had our very first date. In the middle of a pandemic, Lonnie planned something safe, intentional, and completely unique: a private wine tasting in Midtown, where he was the sommelier.

He handpicked every wine and walked me through each one, from the grape to the country of origin. I was impressed—not just with the wine, but with him. I’ve always appreciated details and thoughtfulness, and he brought both in spades. That night, I knew there was something special.

Since then, we’ve traveled to 7 countries, explored 3 World Wonders, caught a couple of Broadway Plays, cheered at 2 Major League stadiums, and shared 1 unforgettable engagement.
