It all started at the Pittsburgh Zoo. We were both Zoo Camp Teachers and had just started our first summer there. Honestly, I didn't like Matt at first. To me, he was known as the Zoo Camp Teacher that left my kids a hyper, crazy bunch after lunch coverage. We finished the summer and went our separate ways just to join back up the following summer. This time, something was different. A fun friendship, started by the story of the Hash Slinging Slasher and a group of 8/9 year olds, quickly turned into more as the summer went on. Despite my many attempts at flirting, it wasn't until the end of the summer that Matt took the hint... finally. Again, we went our separate ways and back to school at the end of the summer, but this time keeping in touch every day. Before we could make things official, Matt mentioned he wanted to tell his mom first, keeping the guise of visiting me in Erie as visiting his lifelong friend and neighbor. On October 1st, 2017, Matt came back from a party and facetimed me and we talked for hours before hanging up. Moments after hanging up, in true Matt fashion, he calls back and goes "You're my girlfriend, right?" And 7 years later, here we are! (first photo together in 2017, Columbus Zoo)

Where It Started

The Proposal

It was December 23, 2023. Brittany had been at the Zoo all day already since she works there and was running their Santa event. Brittany, Matt, his family, and her sister's family all met up with her to see the Pittsburgh Zoo Zoo Lights. Having a slight suspicion, Brittany, thankfully, changed out of her Dwight Schrute holiday sweater for the Zoo Lights. They all started at the entrance of the Zoo and walked around the entire Zoo. Brittany's niece and nephew served as a fantastic distraction to any side conversation that might have happened while deciding where in the park to propose. They had made it to where the music was being played that evening and Brittany no longer had any suspicion, she thought it wasn't happening because they were almost at the end of the lights. On the way out of the park, Matt's mom asked to get pictures in front of a beautifully lit tree which, if you know Debbie, one quick pic, isn't anything out of the ordinary so they walked over and posed for the photo. Not really realizing what was happening, Brittany called for everyone to join the picture, but Matt had a different plan. Matt knelt down in front of the tree and proposed in front of his family, some of hers, and a whole lot of Zoo guests, in the place they first met. Brittany's first reaction was to say "Shut up" - repeatedly, but as you can tell, she did finally say yes.
