Matt and Brooke met in high school. Matt asked Brooke out at the Preston golf course the week before their senior year started. He put Brooke's ball down for her on a tee at the last hole that read "will you be my girlfriend?"

They were long-distance dating for 6 years while in college- Brooke was in Kansas and Matt was in Iowa. Visits to each other included attending KU basketball games and Hawkeye football games. Many sorority date parties and medical school proms were also attended over the years. Matt moved to Kansas City in 2023 and proposed shortly after. He popped the question the same way he asked her to be his girlfriend 8 years prior, written on a golfball.
