When we met at Kilroy's on Kirkwood over Halloween weekend in 2014, we sparked a conversation over water long islands and Welch's fruit snacks. We both knew that there was something special happening, as our initial conversation was hours long. Even though we were from rival colleges - Indiana University and Purdue University - we found that we had more in common than we thought!
With us both being halfway through our senior years in college, a distance relationship was the last thing that we were looking for. Donovan was in the midst of applying for jobs all over the country, while Brooke was preparing for her move to Milwaukee.
Her Version: I was so busy soaking up the last 7 months of college with my best friends that a relationship was the last thing on my radar. Donovan saw something more in us though and started to pursue me. He would text me often, asking if he could come back to IU to take me on a date. Once I said yes, he came to Bloomington and took me on the cheapest date that our broke college student budgets would allow - $2 Blue Moons and a cheeseburger that we split.
His Version: I was super excited to have her finally agree on a date with me - had I known that she was going to be my wife some day, I probably would have saved up more for that first date. The date went well, and we started scheduling visits several times a month. After a few months of dating, I met her family over Christmas break and we made it official.
Her Version: After five years of dating, we returned to IU for a weekend of fun and re-visiting our roots. While we were there, Donovan proposed to me between the "Sample Gates," which is the gateway to the campus. I was completely surprised, and was so happy that he chose somewhere so meaningful to us! When we went down the street to the alumni bar for a celebratory drink, I found out that he planned a surprise engagement celebration with all of our family and friends. It was the happiest day of my life, and I really thought that my heart was going to explode!
His Version: I was extremely nervous - I kept replaying what I was going to say in my head so that I wouldn't mess up ( I dropped the ring... I hadn't planned for that). I had been planning this for months, and coordinating with family and friends to make sure that the day was absolutely perfect. I was so relieved once she said yes, and couldn't wait to celebrate.
