In February 2015, Caitlin and Joel flew to Beijing for a study abroad program. They were assigned to be neighbors in the international student dorm. They met on the first day of the program on a field trip to Tiananmen Square. They bonded quickly and became travel partners, visiting Tokyo and Hong Kong together, as well as the cities of Guilin, Tianjin, Nanjing, Luoyang, and Anyang within China.

South Bend, Indiana

After returning from China, Joel started work in Chicago while Caitlin completed her senior year at Notre Dame. The year was full of trips between Chicago and South Bend, with a few "flex travel" trips to Joel's client site in Mason, MI. After graduation, Caitlin and Joel traveled to Spain and Portugal to celebrate.

Chicago, Illinois

After graduation, Caitlin moved to Chicago. Joel and Caitlin spent three years in Chicago exploring the various neighborhoods and making many memories together. These three years were full of travel as they took weekend trips to New York, Toronto, London, and Denver. They also took several extended trips to Peru, Argentina, Mexico City, Australia, and Italy.

Charlottesville, VA

In 2019, Joel and Caitlin moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where Joel would return to the classroom. While there, they've enjoyed the easy access to beautiful hiking and scenic views. For the first year in Charlottesville, Caitlin was traveling weekly to New York for work and greatly appreciated only having a short 45 minute flight each week.

Marin County, California

After 5 years together, during a trip to California, Joel planned a special day of hiking and eating just for the two of them. On July 18, 2020, Joel proposed to Caitlin at the peak of Slacker's Hill, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.

Getting to Charlottesville

Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) is the most convenient option, located 20 minutes from our venue and the hotel. CHO has direct flights from New York (LGA), Atlanta, Washington DC (IAD), Chicago (ORD), Philadelphia, and Charlotte. Richmond Airport (RIC) is located about one hour away, and will have direct flights to Boston in addition to the above. Washington, DC is located 2-2.5 hours away by car. Dulles (IAD) is slightly closer to Charlottesville than Reagan (DCA). Both airports have flights to most major cities, and Dulles has direct flights to Charlottesville for any travelers who want to fly through DC.

Sites Around Town

The Rotunda &amp; The Lawn The United States has only 11 UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Sites, and the main campus of the University of Virginia is one of them. Thomas Jefferson, who founded the University, designed the "Academical Village" that constitutes the center of main grounds. The Memorial to Enslaved Laborers near the Rotunda is a 2020 addition to Grounds. You can also check out the shops on the "Corner" across the street. The Downtown MallThere are a variety of local restaurants and shops to visit on the Mall. Some of our favorite places on the Mall are: New Dominion Bookstore, O' Suzannah, Mudhouse Coffee, Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar, and Alley Light. Near the Mall is also the McGuffey Art Center. MonticelloThomas Jefferson was a proud resident of Charlottesville, and you can visit his historic property (which, along with the University grounds, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site). They offer many guided tours of the famous house, which is located ~15 minutes away from Boar's Head.

Hikes

Monticello-Saunders TrailSaunders-Monticello Trail is a beautiful, well-maintained trail that includes both paved, gravel, and a boardwalk trail. It’s especially great for strollers and families. The trail sits at the base of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. The full trail is roughly 2 miles out, and you can always turn around at any time. Humpback RocksThe go-to day hike for locals. Roughly 35 minutes from Boar's Head, the summit features panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Parkway. The trail does get quite crowded on sunny days. There are two parking areas, including a visitor’s center on your right as you approach, but you can also park closer to the trailhead if you go up another 300 yards on your left. The hike is relatively uphill for the full 1.2 miles up, roughly 30-40-minutes one way, totaling 2.5 miles out-and-back with 600+ feet of elevation gain.

Potters Craft Cider (Cider) A cidery housed in a gorgeous stone building atop a hill. (10 minutes from Boar's Head) Selvedge Brewing (Beer) A new brewery housed in the remodeled "Wool Factory," a former mill complex from 1868. The complex includes a bakery-cafe as well. (20 minutes) Champion (Beer)A brewery with nice summer patio seating and a refreshing pilsner, the Shower Beer. (15 minutes) Random Row (Beer)Industrial-style brewery with good variety of styles, just a few minutes' drive from downtown. Pippin Hill (Wine)A renowned winery on a gorgeously expansive property that serves great food as well. (15 minutes)

It has been a wild ride to plan this wedding throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, the weeks leading up to the wedding have brought great news on this front. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has released new guidance for fully vaccinated people (14 days after the second shot) which is extremely encouraging. As of May 16, the CDC says "if you are fully vaccinated, you can resume activities that you did prior to the pandemic" (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated.html). We are pleased to learn that 90%+ of our wedding guests will be fully vaccinated. We are also pleased to see cases plummet in Charlottesville and Albemarle County specifically. As of May 19th, 73% of residents have received at least one dose, with 61% fully vaccinated. As a result, we have seen an average of 1 case per day for the past 7 days. The state of Virginia is also lifting all COVID-19 restrictions on May 28th (https://dailyprogress.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/va-removing-mask-mandate-for-fully-vaccinated-people-lifting-all-covid-restrictions-may-28/article_07dd2a2f-c29f-5ee5-a9bf-8edd84997b0f.html). While we were finalizing our plans, there had been a cap of 100 guests for weddings. Despite the lifted restrictions, we are still keeping our event at less than 100 people. While we are sad not to be able to celebrate with everyone, we felt that abiding by the 100-person restriction was the safest option. While life is returning to normal, there are still a few COVID-19 considerations. If you are not fully vaccinated (again, 14 days after the second shot), we kindly ask you to wear a mask throughout the weekend. We are working with our venue to enact all the necessary COVID precautions (including distancing, safe food preparation, ...) to make our event comfortable for everyone. We encourage all of our guests traveling to wear a mask while in transit. The CDC writes that even fully vaccinated people "will still be required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations." We recognize that people have varying levels of comfort regardless of the CDC's guidance. If you're fully-vaccinated, we completely welcome you to wear a mask throughout the weekend if you wish. Thank you for bearing with us throughout these past months as we've navigated the uncertainty of this pandemic. At some points we thought this wedding would have to scale down to just 10 people, so we are thrilled to welcome so many of our friends and family on June 5th! To those we are not able to include in our weekend, we are sorry not to have you with us but we are excited to celebrate with you later on when we meet again.
