Our Wedding

Cameron and Mykel got engaged in Sevierville, TN. They have traveled to the Great Smoky Mountains many times and over the years, like many, have fallen in love with the area. For their Christmas gift to each other they packed books, blankets, a ton of chocolate, their dog Theia, and headed off into the Smokies again. Upon hitting the road, they realized... everyone else was also hitting the road? (Oh, duh!) It was the day after Christmas. Everyone else was also traveling! Thus began a very long (what should have been 8) 11-hour drive through traffic, rain, and fog. Finally, arriving at the entrance of a winding, hilly, dark, and steep as all get-out road, they began the stressful climb upward. After some careful maneuvering, strategic cursing, and multiple laps around the track, they finally reached their hideaway cabin. The next day, Mykel started plotting and planning. He was going to find the perfect romantic moment to ask Cameron to marry him. Looking over the Smokies high up in the sky? Hiking near a gorgeous creek? So many possibilities. It was her idea to drive to a place they had never been to, Cades Cove. Turns out they would not only drive to, but drive through, Cades Cove. Which turned out to be an almost never-ending driving tour in a valley of historic old buildings nestled between the Smokies. Not exactly romantic. The blacksmiths? Not romantic. The graveyards? Not romantic. The outhouse? Not romantic. After all that driving, they arrived in Gatlinburg to tour the Christmas River Walk. Romantic! But so many people and no place to have a moment alone. The parking lot of the grocery store before heading back? No, also not romantic. The day was coming to an end as they made the trek back up the mountains to the cabin. Cameron started to cook dinner while Mykel lit the fireplace and contemplated his plan for tomorrow. It was peaceful and warm in the cabin. Outside gentle snowflakes fell from the sky and Christmas lights on neighboring cabins were lighting up one by one across the mountain range. They were singing to Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton... Finally, after all the hurrying, the rough road trip, the chaos of busy streets and the confinement of a long driving tour, the perfect moment had come. Mykel got down on one knee and asked Cameron to marry him in the calm, perfect, simplicity of their cozy mountain cabin. Therefore we are all, in some sense, mountaineers, and going to the mountains is going home. The mountains are calling, and I must go. - John Muir
