Candice and I met in school. I don't remember her during orientation or the very beginning of didactic courses but one day I walked in and noticed her giving me a look and a smirk. I thought, "why is she looking at me like that?" I would walk into class and catch her eye and think, "what is wrong with me? Is there something on my face?" As classes carried on, we would later end up studying in a mutual group of friends and getting along. As anyone that has gone through pharmacy school can tell you, "work hard, play hard" is a way of life. So just as we worked hard at our studies, we also played hard – all the while kindling up something longlasting. I always felt comfortable with her. We could laugh and joke about anything. We also practiced being culturally competent (a reoccurring theme in pharmacy school) by learning about each other's cultures, backgrounds and upbringing. In doing so, we found that we bonded more deeply than just school and fun, but also family orientation and strong faith. We just clicked. We spent most of our days together (if not all). I had the perfect companion; she was the Bonnie to my Clyde. The summer after P1 year was a great time. We would just ride for hours looking for things to experience together. By the end of Summer Time Chi, we entered a romance period that still hasn't ended after 5 years.

Weeks before the proposal Justin suggested planning an early thanksgiving dinner with our Chicago family since we were spending thanksgiving in Houston. I thought nothing of it since we are both family oriented and would plan family gatherings on a whim.My friend Flo was extra persistent about shopping for thanksgiving attire since we weren't going to be together for actual thanksgiving. Also one week prior to the proposal another friend Zakiya mentioned that she would be in town for work and would stay a couple days extra with me. In hindsight I was so oblivious but it couldn't have been more perfect. On November 21st 2016, we arrived at Devon Seafood restaurant in Downtown Chicago. As we walked past the guest tables moving towards the back of the restaurant I remember thinking, "man I didn't know Devon hosted big events or even had a bar or seating for so many people". Justin's family, our friends and loved one were all conversing, laughing and enjoying each other's company. Before dinner was served, Justin's dad led with a toast which ended with a toast from Justin. I was alarmed when he said I thank God for you Candice in an unusual tone... the whole room was silent and as I glanced to our left everyone's cameras were up and by the time I looked back Justin was on one knee and asked, "Will you marry me?" I was officially numb, lost for words and my heart melted. I softly replied, "Of course, Yes!"
