Cara and Tom met in a Holiday Inn in Birmingham, Alabama, during their study abroad year. They were both far from home—Cara from Glasgow, Tom from England—and neither expected anything more than a few new experiences and maybe a couple of new friends. But within days of meeting, they were a couple. It felt easy, natural—like they’d just stumbled into something that made perfect sense. They spent the rest of the year pretty much inseparable, doing everything together. Even though they didn’t win “Cutest Couple” at the Aussie International Awards (still a sore point), they had the kind of connection that didn’t need a title to prove it. When the year ended, reality hit—Cara went back to Glasgow and Tom stayed in Birmingham. Long distance wasn’t easy. Cara would make the five-hour drive to see Tom, and Tom would take the Megabus up to Glasgow (he still can’t drive, by the way). It was tough, but they made it work. Then the pandemic happened. Even more distance, even more uncertainty. But they stuck it out. Eventually, Tom moved to Glasgow and moved in with Cara and her parents, trading Megabus journeys for shared routines and family dinners. Not long after, they got a place of their own in Glasgow’s Southside—a part of the city that feels just right for them. These days, you’ll find them running together through Pollok Park or heading out on one of their daily coffee walks. From a hotel lobby in Alabama to a home in Glasgow, it’s been a journey—and they wouldn’t change a thing.
