Things to Do

We are so appreciative of everyone willing to make the trip to celebrate our Wedding Day with us! If wanting to make it a weekend getaway, we hope to help out with any planning and offering some of our favorite activities along the great Gitche Gumee (better known as Lake Superior :)). Below you will personal recommendations from Colin and Carli if wanting to explore Duluth and up the North Shore (AKA our favorite place in the world). If you're really feeling adventurous, hit up all of our favorite towns listed along beautiful Highway 61!

We've also included recommendations from our incredible venue owners if wanting to explore more of Solon Springs. This little WI town has a lot to offer!

duluth, mn

Ursa Minor Brewing

A great variety of beer to please everyone! Ursa Minor also has a wood fired pizza oven with great food on-site. Fun fact: Colin informed Lori + Devin of his plans on asking Carli to marry him on Ursa Minor's patio after a weekend in Tofte (they were thrilled, obviously ;)).

Bent Paddle Brewing

A long time favorite! Bent Paddle has a great space indoors and an outdoor plaza/patio with more seating options available. Check out their food truck schedule for some local eats.

Canal Park Brewing Company

By far the best location! Right off Lake Superior, you have great views in and outside. Canal Park Brewing is also a very popular restaurant with some of the best sweet potato fries. This is sure a hot spot, so be prepared to wait a bit (luckily it's right off the lake, so waiting doesn't feel as bad).

Love Creamery

A must stop for all ice cream lovers!

Va Benne

INCREDIBLE made from scratch Italian restaurant. Located right above the Lakewalk for great views of Canal Park and the Lift Bridge. We recommend reservations be made for the best seats.

Fitger's Inn

Fitger's is close to our hearts! Within this historical building is a hotel, restaurants, and shopping.

Canal Park

The place that has it all! Canal Park is a hot spot for lodging, eating, drinking, and shopping. Head over to watch the ships coming in, walk the lakewalk, shop local, and see the lighthouse.

two harbors, mn

Castle Danger Brewery

One of our favorite, most popular stops when heading up the shore. Castle Danger has an incredible space indoors and outdoors! They frequent food trucks or you can order pizzas to get delivered right to you (we love Do North Pizzaria!).

Gooseberry Falls

Gooseberry has waterfalls, great trails, and a visitor center. Great stop for those who haven't been. :)

silver bay, mn

Black Beach

A great stop for a picnic or to take in the sights! Fun Fact: Black Beach is where we took some of our engagement photos. :)

Palisade Head

You must be okay with heights for this stop - but it is so beautiful! The easiest way to get to the top of Palisade Head is to drive, if you're comfortable. Palisade is a hot spot for climbers, which is always fun to watch.

Tettegouche State Park

Tettegouche has plenty of trails for amazing lake views along the way!

Bean and Bear Lake Hiking Loop

If you're looking for a good hike and have time, this is one of our favorites. The Bean and Bear hike is a 7 mile loop with plenty of camping sites or places to enjoy a picnic along the way!

tofte, mn

The home of the Nelson cabin and the place we first lived together. This little town holds a big spot of our hearts.

Coho Café
Coho is a stop for breakfast, lunch, and coffee. After lunch, walk over next door to visit Water's Edge Trading Co for local gifts, clothes, and outdoor gear.

Bluefin Grill
Part of the Bluefin Bay resort, Bluefin Grill is a great spot to have fresh, local, and seasonal food. Dining is located right off a beach of Lake Superior! Before or after you eat, walk on their own private boardwalk along the lake.

Tofte Park
A quiet spot to enjoy the lake in this community park.

Carlton Peak Hike
I think we could do this hike with our eyes closed we have done is so much! Carlton is one of our favorite hikes and has the best overlook once you get to the top. Carlton is just under 4 miles and is an out and back loop.

Britton Peak
Britton and Carlton hikes share the same parking lot. Britton is a short (.3 miles) and effective hike! Great views and perfect if you're in a time crunch. Britton also has great mountain biking trails!

Oberg Mountain Trail
A 3ish mile loop with TONS of great overlooks. You'll get views of Lake Superior, Oberg Lake, and Moose Mountain.

Temperence River State Park
Another favorite hike that greets you with a waterfall. Walk along the river on flat trails or head across Highway 61 for sights to see on the lake side.

lutsen, mn

Another town we love dearly! Colin's grandparents (Nan's mom and dad) have owned a beautiful cabin on Caribou Lake and built a home right across the street that they recently sold. We also worked in Lutsen the year we lived on the shore.

Superior National Golf Course
A must stop, bucket list place for our golf lovers! Superior National is where Colin worked as a golf assistant (while Carli flipped burgers and made drinks part-time). For our non golfers who want to check out the course, try out Footgolf! Such a fun, goofy sport. Superior National has a great bar inside for casual food and drinks.

North Shore Winery
Where Carli spent her days working (and drinking wine) as a Cook County resident. North Shore winery has some of the best wine with grapes sourced from Lodi, CA. Stop over for a glass, wine tasting, or a bottle. :) Truly the best!

Fika Coffee
A Nordic-inspired coffee shop in the heart of Lutsen. Great seasonally inspired coffees made with locally sourced ingredients.

White Sky Rock + Lake Agnes Hike
Located right by Caribou Lake, this is a great hike spot! Take the spur trail to White Sky Rock for a great overlook of Caribou Lake or the trail off the Superior Hiking Trail to Lake Agnes.

Cascade Restaurant + Pub
A must stop when in need of a good burger and fries!

grand marais, mn

Voyageur Brewing

Our favorite brewery! We used to make this part of our "weekly grocery store run" when running errands. Voyageur is full of great beer, food and appetizers (our favorite app is the cheese curds with the raspberry bbq sauce), and a great little merchandise store just across the parking lot.

Angry Trout

Incredible food right on the water! A sit down experience with indoor and outdoor seating.

Fisherman's Daughter

Similar to the Angry Trout, but more of a casual experience. Same amazing fish!

Java Moose

For our coffee and espresso lovers! The Maple Latte and Nordic Miel Latte are our go-to's.

Drury Lane Books

The sweetest bookstore in the world. They have a great selection for everyone!

Gunflint Tavern

The GFT is a great spot to enjoy a cocktail on the rooftop overlooking Lake Superior or to grab dinner.

Putt 'n Pets Mini Golf

The most unique experience by far and our guilty pleasure. Putt 'n Pets is full of animals to keep you company during your round of mini golf.

Pincushion Mountain Overlook Trail

Take the Gunflint Trail up to this trail head. Pincushion is about a 4 mile out and back hike and is flat aside from the very end. Incredible views of Grand Marias and the Lake!

There's so many hidden gems in Grand Marais! Enjoy the lake shore, watch sail boats, and shop all the local stores.
