If you are a U.S. citizen and plan to attend our wedding in Mexico, you will need a valid passport. Here's how to acquire one if you don't already have it:
1. Passport requirements
Proof of U.S. citizenship (such as a birth certificate or previous passport).
A government-issued photo ID (e.g., a driver's license).
Passport-sized photos (usually 2 inches by 2 inches).
A completed DS-11 form (Application for U.S. Passport) - you can fill this out online or in-person.
2. Visit a Passport Acceptance Facility:
In New Mexico, you can find passport acceptance facilities at post offices, clerk of court offices, and some public libraries. You may need to make an appointment.
3. Pay the Fees:
Passport fees vary depending on whether you need a new passport or a renewal, and if you need expedited processing. Check the U.S. Department of State's website for the most up-to-date fee information. They accept checks or money orders. There is a fee to get a money order there, it will be cheaper to get a money order done at a personal bank.
4. Submit Your Application:
You will need to submit your application in person at a passport acceptance facility. Be prepared to take an oath, provide your documents, and pay the fees.
5. Photo Requirements:
Your passport photos must meet specific requirements, such as size 2x2, background, and facial expression. Many facilities offer photo services for an additional fee. Walgreens also provides passport photos.
6. Processing Time:
Regular processing times for a U.S. passport typically take 4-6 weeks. If you need it sooner, expedited services are available for an additional fee.
7. Travel Plans:
Make sure to apply for your passport well in advance of the wedding date to avoid any travel complications.
Additional Information:
Visit the U.S. Department of State's official website (travel.state.gov) for the most up-to-date passport information, including processing times, fees, and application forms.
