Our Wedding

When Adelaide met Chicago in Denver, our story began

Our love story starts in the most romantic of places—a Chicago Bears bar in Denver (yes, they exist). Carly had just moved from Singapore and was new to the scene; Sean had recently landed in Denver after stints in New Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii. We actually met three times before anything stuck… and one of us may or may not have remembered any of them (blame the jet lag, not the malort). It wasn’t until just after COVID lockdowns lifted, when a mutual friend (thanks, Annette!) invited Sean over to watch a Port Adelaide AFL game, that the magic really began. Sean showed up, played it cool, and finally asked Carly out. The rest, as they say, is history.

Since then, we’ve bonded over our love of the outdoors, snowboarding (Sean is annoyingly good), hiking in the Colorado Rockies, and watching all the sports. Carly knows about five NFL rules and maybe five Bears players—Sean knows more, which is helpful because Carly is that person who watches the game like it’s a movie, constantly asking “Wait, what just happened?” or “Was that holding the ball?” We’ve been working on Aussie-fying Sean—correcting “catch” to “mark” during AFL games and slipping slang into everyday conversation. Sean, for his part, has been fully on board with Port Power from day one (and may even yell at the TV more than Carly does).

We even navigated a year apart when Sean moved to Alabama, but as it turns out, some things are worth coming back for. Today, Sean’s flying for American Airlines, Carly’s working at Terumo as a Clinical Marketing Manager and still asking follow-up questions during football games, and we share life with our dog, Barbara (it’s Barb’s world—we’re just living in it). Now, we’re tying the knot at Longview Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, surrounded by family, friends, and a whole lot of wine. We can’t wait to celebrate this next chapter with you!

Do I need a visa to visit Australia?

Which airport should I fly into?

You'll want to book your flights into Adelaide Airport (ADL)—it's the main (and only) commercial airport in the city, just 15 minutes from the CBD. There are multiple daily direct flights from major Australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, making connections from international arrivals straightforward.Once you land, it's a quick trip into the city—perfect for dropping your bags before heading out for a flat white or a beachside stroll.

Any packing tips for flights within Australia?

Yes—and this one's a must-know.Carry-on rules in Australia are stricter than in the U.S. In the U.S., many airlines allow carry-ons up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm). But in Australia, domestic airlines have tighter restrictions:Qantas &amp; Virgin Australia: 48 x 34 x 23 cm (about 19 x 13 x 9 inches)Jetstar: Even stricter, often enforcing a 7kg (15lb) limit total for all carry-on items combined (yes, even your handbag or backpack counts).And unlike in the U.S., they're not bluffing—they'll actually weigh your bags at the gate, especially Jetstar. What’s Adelaide like?

We call it Radelaide for a reason 😉With around 1.3 million people, this so-called “City of Churches” is actually more about wine, footy, and festivals than sermons. To the west, you’ve got beaches and sunset views over the ocean. To the north, east, and south? Vineyards—everywhere.It’s like if Napa and Chicago moved to the beach, got more sunshine, and chilled out a bit.Terrible, right?

Where should we stay during the trip?

For the lead-up to the wedding, we recommend basing yourself in Adelaide CBD (aka downtown)—it's central, super walkable, and surrounded by lush parklands, top-tier cafés, and wine bars galore.If you’re keen for a beach vibe, check out Grange or Henley Beach—both about 15 minutes from the city with plenty of great Airbnbs, ocean views, and breezy brunch spots.The night before the wedding, we suggest heading up to Mount Barker or nearby Macclesfield so you can join us for dinner at the pub (and a pint or two, naturally). But no stress if you’re coming from the city— a wedding day bus will be running to and from the venue to make life easy. What should I wear?

The wedding is cocktail attire—so think suits or blazers, and party-ready dresses or jumpsuits. It’s a vineyard celebration, so dress to impress but keep comfort in mind (no stilettos required—we’ll be on grass, gravel, and the dance floor).Bring a light jacket for later in the night—it cools off once the sun dips behind the vines.For the other events during the week (long lunches, wildlife hangs, pub night), smart-casual is perfect. Layers and sunscreen are your Aussie essentials.

What’s the weather like in November?

Unpredictable—like your mate who says ‘I’m only staying for one drink.’Spring in South Australia can throw anything at you—scorching hot, picture-perfect, or weirdly chilly, sometimes all in the same day.We’ve had November weeks that hit 30°C (86°F) and others that barely made it past 15°C (59°F). Evenings can drop to around 10°C (50°F), especially out in the Hills. So whether you're packing sunscreen or a scarf—or both—you won’t regret it.Pack layers, bring a light jacket, sunnies, sunscreen, and maybe even a brolly just in case. And seriously—check the forecast the week before you come. Adelaide weather loves a surprise.

What’s the go with transport?

To be honest… public transport in Adelaide isn’t great (sorry, SA Gov—we said what we said). If you want flexibility, we recommend hiring a car (get ready to join the left side bandits) or using Uber—it’s widely available and reasonably priced.Longview Vineyard is about 45 minutes from Adelaide CBD, and a bit closer if you're staying in the Hills.On the wedding day, we’ve got you covered:🚌 Buses will run to and from Longview Vineyard with pick-ups in both Adelaide CBD and Mount Barker, so you can sip and celebrate stress-free. Will there be food for dietary restrictions?

Should I get travel insurance?

We definitely recommend it. From flight delays to lost luggage to surprise kangaroo encounters (kidding… sort of), travel insurance can be a lifesaver.It’s especially handy if you’re planning extra travel around Australia or have non-refundable bookings. Some credit cards include coverage—so check before you buy a separate policy.Peace of mind is a great souvenir. 💁‍♀️

Do I have to try Vegemite?

Look, it’s not mandatory… but it’s part of the cultural experience. If you’re brave, we’ll show you the right way to eat it (thinly spread on buttered toast). Just don’t treat it like Nutella. Rookie mistake.

Do you tip in Australia?

Not really. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia the way it is in the U.S. Hospitality staff are paid a living wage, so while you can round up or leave a little something for excellent service, no one’s chasing you down for 20%. If in doubt—just smile and say thanks!

Will the wildlife kill me?

Look, it’s possible… but they’ll do it quietly.Unlike in the U.S., where animals charge, maul, or rip you to pieces in broad daylight, Australian creatures are a bit more subtle—a spider, snake, or jellyfish might just casually ruin your day when you’re not paying attention.That said, the chances of something actually happening are super low—unless you wander barefoot into the bush or try to cuddle a blue-ringed octopus (don’t). The real threat? Magpies. Those swoopy little demons will take you out for wearing the wrong hat in spring.Bottom line: you’ll be fine. Just respect the wildlife, stick to marked paths, and we’ll handle the koala cuddles from a safe and supervised distance.
