Note: We do not recommend renting a car if you are not from New England. Boston is notoriously difficult to drive in and Massachusetts drivers are mean. (They're called Massholes for a reason). Boston never burnt down, so the roads never had to be rebuilt. The streets are really meant for horses and carriages, not cars.

Public transport in Boston is relatively easy to navigate. It is actually quite a small city so it is easy to get from A to B. It is also very walkable if you would prefer to get some steps in.

Charlie card: this is the card you tap at the gate to enter each station. There are kiosks in each station where you can buy them. You have a few options:

•a day pass

•a two day pass

•a week long pass

•a general card that you can purchase and put whatever amount of money you wish.

Inbound: refers to the direction going toward downtown Boston.

Outbound: refers to the direction going away from downtown Boston

Street level stops: parts of the green line go above ground. When boarding the train, you tap your card on the kiosk next to the driver. At the street level, drivers are not required to stop at each stop. If you would like to disembark at a street level stop, you have to ring the bell right after your train leaves the platform one stop before your destination. The bell is a black or yellow line located on the wall of the carriage.
