Our Wedding

Dear Family and Friends,

We look forward to celebrating our wedding with you, and before we do so if you want to know how a BC Boy managed to pluck a Wild Rose from Alberta, please read on. If you know Carolyn, you would think that the odds were stacked against Fred. She was not shy about her preference for Caucasian fellows (ICU preferred) wearing backwards hats (0/2 for Fred). Because of that, Fred never really knew that he was her type despite already being friends for 2 years in medical school. He didn’t realize that when he was asking Carolyn, “who in our class do you think I should go out with?” Inside she was screaming, “ME! ME!” Things might have gone more smoothly had he been able to read her mind. Which, by the way, is as true now as it was in 2018.&nbsp; Since then, Fred has survived the “meet the family” moment, which was with 婆婆 Constance, who appeared to be the one given the duty to intimidate Fred. Carolyn has survived being asked if she understood what is being said in Cantonese for the 1000th time, responding with “係少少啦” However, 7 years, 4 dates, 2 dogs, and 1 bumbling proposal speech later, here we are. Carolyn will be making sure Fred doesn’t meander off track in speech and in life, and Fred is 3 years into “I’ve been making her morning coffee for 50 years. (GERD permitting).” One thing we have in common though, is that we are looking forward to celebrating this union of “opposites attract” with all of you. We don’t want to run out of material for the vows though, so if you want more, we'll see you on August 31, 2025.&nbsp;

For our out of town guests, while our venue is in Burnaby, this is very close to Vancouver, so if you're hoping to make a vacation out of it, staying in Vancouver proper or even Downtown Vancouver (23 minute drive) is a fine option. If you're wanting to stay close to the venue, below is the closest hotel. We'd suggest looking into AirBnb or VRBO as well for other options.

Phnom Penh

244 East Georgia Street, Vancouver, British Columbia V6A 1Z7, CanadaCLOSED ON TUESDAYSDelicious Viet/Cambodian food. Gets quite busy especially on the weekends so get there early. Carolyn and Fred's favourites include the chicken wings, beef luc lac, butter beef, and baby lotus roots.

Kissa Tanto 

63 E Pender St, Vancouver, BC V6A 1T8For more upscale dining, this offers Japanese and Italian Fusion served in a family style format. Must try's are the carne cruda, Tajarin, whole fried fish. this restaurant has been awarded one Michelin star.

Dolar Shop

Our favourite hot pot place in Vancouver. It's a splurge for hotpot, but convenient if you can make it for their lunch specials. Carolyn loves the chef's creamy pork broth.

Song Huong

Known for their Bun Bo Hue. Another hole in the wall spot, but clean enough for Carolyn.

Nadri

Hole in the wall Korean food known for their noodles and soups. Fred always gets the gal bi tang, and Carolyn gets the clam Kalgooksu. Padak Padak chicken is also large in portion and delicious. If you go for lunch, try the bakery next door, Maison Mori.

The lunch special on Saturdays is a must try!

Chancho's

Authentic mexican taco's which Carolyn says is the best she's had. Can't go wrong with the pork belly.

Zarak

Afghan food. Their brunch is a must which is a western-afghan fusion. The afghan plate is a must, and they have a creative selection of mixed drinks. Fred always enjoys a Turkish coffee there.

Desserts 

Mello Donuts

Brioche Donuts with a whipped cream filling- Carolyn and Fred's favourite is the cereal donut

Tina Cake Desserts

Cheap hole in the wall spot, probably best for take out. Carolyn's favourite is the green bean dessert with sticky rice and coconut milk #38, and Fred's is the mango sticky rice- it's worth it to upgrade to the pandan sticky rice.

Ice Cream

So many amazing places for ice cream. Favourite must tries include Elephant Garden Creamery (which specializes in asian inspired flavours), Rain or Shine, Earnest Ice Cream (creamiest). Secret shout out for the free, ayce ice cream at Dolar Shop at the end of the meal. Soft serve bliss.

BETA 5 Chocolates

Unfortunate news, but they will close down their cream puff operation well prior to the wedding date. It's here for the memories, but their chocolates are worth trying if you haven't.

Small Victory

Great coffee, amazing croissants particularly the almond croissant.

Nemesis

There are two locations, one in Olympic Village and one downtown. Coffee can be an acquired taste for some if you aren't used to more tangy flavors. Baked goods are delicious.
