How We Met

Imagine a world…where human touch was illegal. Wait, you were all there 4 years ago! The couple had the privilege of falling in love during a world halting, devastating pandemic. Caryn realized she had not made a new friend in over a year. But she found herself in a new city and the vaccine was on the horizon, so she opened herself up to the atrocious world of online dating. With the world opening up, Andrew was also looking to date. They matched the day after Andrew’s birthday. He noticed the awkward small talk he had experienced on dating apps was absent with Caryn and he was glad she suggested meeting sooner, rather than later. They went on two Zoom dates, followed by a socially distanced park date over berries and hummus after which she let him drive her back to her apartment. After three months of “middle school style dating” and with a little help from Pizer and Moderna, Andrew and Caryn were ready to watch a movie indoors and without masks together. They realized they truly valued each other’s friendship in addition to their romantic connection and soon became “official.”&nbsp; Shortly after the couple moved in together, Caryn had a terrible rock climbing accident where, if you haven’t heard the story, her radial head shattered. In order to be able to see Caryn in the emergency room, Andrew lied and told the nurse at the front desk that “he was engaged to be engaged” with her. When he saw her lying in the hospital bed in relatively good spirits (thanks to the ketamine) Andrew realized that he would love to spend the rest of his life making sure Caryn was okay.&nbsp; After an intricately planned proposal (see below for details) the couple is excited to celebrate their love with all of their closest friends and family. Falling In Love

How Caryn Fell In LoveThere is one song in particular that reminds Caryn of her love for Andrew….Cigarette Daydream by Cage the Elephant. In 2021, Caryn had the joy of attending her first music festival with her longtime friend, Lisa. Lisa brought Caryn to Bottle Rock, and after a long day of drinking white wine and running around to different stages to eventually get a spot to see the Foo Fighters, Cage the Elephant was drunkenly attempting to close out their set while they rested. Caryn was texting her boyfriend arranging to meet up later when the following text message occurred:

They said “I love you” to each other that night. How Andrew Fell in LoveAndrew fell in love with Caryn after their first vacation together. They spent an extended weekend in Mammoth Lakes climbing, hiking in an extinct volcano, kayaking, and cooking nice meals. When it was time to come home, Caryn asked Andrew if he wanted to spend the night at her place and Andrew quickly agreed. They watched “Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” because, as they joked, “it takes commitment to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy with someone.” However, while watching the Fellowship come together on screen, Andrew realized that he had just spent 4 days straight with Caryn and not only did he want to spend another night together, he was looking forward to spending more time with her soon. It was in that moment that he realized he loved Caryn and had found not just a partner but a best friend.

The Engagement

To keep the proposal a secret, Andrew employed the help of his parents to plan an overnight getaway to Monterey. He told Caryn “My mom just said they have an AirBnB in Pacific Grove for next Friday, but their plans fell through. We can have it for a little weekend getaway if you’d like?” Caryn said that sounded like a nice time so he made all the real plans, actually renting an AirBnB, hiring a photographer, and choosing a beach for the proposal. The day they headed down, Caryn was still clueless as to what was about to happen. She was coming off of a very stressful week and hadn’t been able to shower before the drive. A small part of her thought that this might be the weekend that Andrew proposes, but he had let her rummage through his duffle bag, and she figured he wouldn’t let her do that if he was hiding a ring. She even texted her best friend relaying her doubts and put the idea out of her mind. Caryn took an edible, and sat back and enjoyed the drive to the ocean. Night fell, and by the time they reached Carmel, the near full-moon was reflecting off the bay, illuminating a sleepy, quaint seaside town. They arrived at the AirBnB, and walked into….. Other people’s shoes in the entryway, trash on the kitchen counters, and open suitcases in the bedroom. Caryn was still under the impression that this weekend stay was a gift from Andrew’s parents. This was, of course, a ruse, to make Caryn unsuspicious. Andrew had simply booked the wrong night and AirBnB host had given them access to the stay a night early. Still inside the AirBnB, Andrew texted his parents the error he made, and Charna asked “Do you want us to take the blame?”. “Yes”. Andrew quickly found a nearby motel in the area, and the highly stressed Andrew and the slightly amused Caryn checked into a room that, save the television, hadn’t been updated since 1999. The next day, Andrew had to keep Caryn busy before the arranged time of the proposal. He told Cayn, “The beach we are going to has really cool rock formations, but we have to wait for the tide to go down by noon.” With the motel shower broken, he washed his hair in the sink to look his best. Caryn thought this was a little weird considering they were just going to the beach. Pacific Grove was having their town Halloween event, so after walking along the ocean they explored the downtown shops and watched trick-or-treaters go by until Andrew deemed it time to head beach. They made their way to Pebble Beach which, unbeknownst to Andrew and Caryn, requires a toll of $11 to enter. Of course, the credit card system at the booth was down and cash was required for entry. They just barely had enough cash to pay for entry. It was 11:55am and they had 5 minutes to get to the photographer on the beach. Andrew led Caryn along the water line. About 100 feet down the sand he could see the photographer trying to camouflage while maneuvering two large cameras strapped to her shoulders. He also could see some older couples walking towards them and realized if he didn’t get on one knee now, they’d ruin the photographer's shot. Turning to Caryn and holding both her hands, Andrew said “I love you so much” and that’s when she knew that he was about to ask her to marry him.&nbsp; After the initial wave of joy, the photographer introduced herself and they had a lovely photo session followed by a fancy dinner in Carmel. However, Andrew hinted that there was more to come and that they needed to get home so they could change for something else. Little did Caryn know, Andrew had asked their climbing friends to plan a surprise Halloween themed engagement party back at their apartment. They ended the night partying with friends, eating amazing cake, and celebrating their love.

Our reception venue is doubling as your accommodation! You are welcome to stay at Desert Dimension at no cost Friday night through Monday morning! You just need to get yourself there. We recommend either driving down or flying in and renting a car.Please note, Caryn and Andrew will be assigning your sleeping arrangements if staying on-site, so be prepared to share with a friend or two!Desert Dimension features various geodesic domes and a shower and bathroom house.
