Fate works in funny ways, and for us, it happened through the videogame Overwatch. What started as chance encounters with Minnesota friends online soon became something much more special. Little did I know that among those virtual battles, I would meet the person who would change my life—my future husband.

We made the most of our long-distance relationship by turning to videogame Stardew Valley, where our virtual farm became a place for us to connect. Through late-night gaming sessions and shared adventures, we took the time to truly get to know each other. Whether it was discussing our favorite hobbies or dreaming about the future, we quickly realized how much we admired and cared for one another.

After months of connecting online, we decided to take the leap and meet in person. It felt like a blind date, and we were filled with nerves as I flew 1,200 miles from Texas to Minnesota. It was the end of the polar vortex in 2019, and despite the freezing temperatures, we had our first date at the Mall of America, exploring the aquarium together. In that moment, we realized just how much we truly loved each other. Saying goodbye afterward was one of the hardest things we’d ever done.

Like so many others, our plans were put on hold when COVID hit. We had hoped to move forward—renting a place together, buying a home, and planning our future—but travel restrictions and a skyrocketing housing market slowed everything down. Despite the setbacks, we found ways to be together. One of our favorite memories during that time was visiting a petting zoo, reminding us that even in uncertain times, we could still create special moments together.

Chad proposed at one of the most breathtaking spots we’ve ever visited—Shove Point Trail in Tettegouche State Park, overlooking the vast beauty of Lake Superior. It was during a Labor Day camping trip with friends, and after a scenic hike, he got down on one knee, turning an already unforgettable day into the best moment of our lives.

Thanks to COVID, it took nearly three years to purchase our first home. But looking back, I’m so glad we waited for our forever home. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to start this next chapter of our lives together.

Now as we look to the future, the possibilities seem endless. Covid couldn't stop us. We can't wait to build our lives together in our beautiful home.
