Charles Bukowski once wrote about spending the day with his lady love: “We talk about what else there might be to do, but being together solves most of it.” As we are nestled up on a cold Sunday morning writing this silly biography, it’s clear that “being together solves most of it.” We wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

On the strength of this idea, we decided to form a more perfect union: we will become a nation of two. In Kurt Vonnegut’s book Mother Night, a book ostensibly about World War II, the protagonist explains how he plans to survive: “It was going to be about the love my wife and I had for each other. It was going to show how a pair of lovers in a world gone mad could survive by being loyal only to a nation composed of themselves–a nation of two.”

We are so excited to see our friends and family as we formalize our nation of two. As Langston Hughes wrote in his poem “Motto”:

My motto as I live and learn:

Dig and be dug in return.
