In a world of dating apps and social media deep dives, Charles and Sydney's love story began in a delightfully unexpected and timeless way — a blind date. Yes, a real blind date. Totally 1950s, right?

The spark was ignited not by a chance encounter, but through the intentional coordination of two parents with big hopes. Charles' father and Sydney’s mother, both working at the Department of Children and Family Services, happened to be chatting during a work meeting when the conversation turned to their children. Something stirred — perhaps divine intervention, perhaps parental intuition — and just like that, the Lord began writing the first lines of a much bigger story.

In an unusual show of commitment (and a lot of trust), Charles and Sydney promised not to look each other up beforehand. No social media snooping, no Googling, no peeking. They let anticipation build, and on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at noon, they met for the first time at Kalaveras in Rancho Cucamonga.

That first date? It went well. Conversation flowed, laughs were shared, and they agreed to see each other again.

But then came date number two — July 23, 2022, at Javier’s in Newport Beach. Let’s just say…it didn’t go as planned. Strong personalities, deep convictions, and passionate perspectives collided in a tense dinner conversation. The evening ended not with butterflies, but with a mutual agreement — over text, no less — to call it quits.

And that’s where the story should have ended…if it weren’t for the Author behind it all.

Nearly a year later, on June 24, 2023, Sydney’s best friend — and true holy push — Terryn stepped in at just the right time. Sensing that the story might not be over, Terryn gently but persistently persuaded Sydney to invite “the Firefighter” — yes, Charles — to her summer party. If it weren’t for Terryn’s wisdom, her encouragement, and her perfectly timed nudge, that door might have stayed closed. But thanks to her — and God’s gentle stirring — Charles showed up…

As it turns out, Charles had been at a baby shower that same day with two of his friends when he received Sydney’s message. He read it, paused, and thought to himself, “Well, we’re already out… let’s go and see what this is about.”

True to his laid-back and slightly mischievous nature, Charles didn’t respond to the invite — he just showed up. No warning, no confirmation. And if you know Charles, that is right on par with his humor.

Though they didn’t say much to each other that night, the atmosphere was warm, familiar, and quietly meaningful.

in the months following, something began to stir in Sydney’s spirit. Though she hadn’t spoken to Charles since the party — and truthfully, didn’t know him all that well — she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was supposed to invite him to church. For the next six months, that quiet tug from God kept nudging her heart. So, in faith and obedience, Sydney reached out and invited Charles to a few Young Adult events at her church. Each time, he declined.

Charles, in his mind, was thinking, “What’s going to be different this time around?” He was content in the season he was in — settled, maybe even a little guarded. The invitations, though kind, weren’t enough to move him. The timing just didn’t feel right… yet..

Enter Chelsie — Sydney’s other best friend and her second holy push. The two were sitting across from each other at lunch when Chelsie, sensing Sydney’s hesitation after being turned down twice, said, “Okay, you’ve done enough being obedient — let’s just send one last message.” Despite Sydney’s reluctance, Chelsie took the lead — opened her phone, drafted a message to Charles, and with a smile and a little dramatic flair… hit send. It wasn’t just a text — it was a faith-fueled nudge. And this time… Charles said yes. He happened to be off that day, the timing aligned, and something in him said, “Why not?” So, he decided to go.

On December 6, 2023, they met at a Wednesday night service at Patria Church. Something clicked. Slowly and with purpose, they began to talk, spend time together, and eventually date.

Four months later, on April 18, 2024, Charles officially asked Sydney to be his girlfriend. Their love deepened over long talks, laughter, prayer, and many, many beach days. They said “I love you” for the first time on June 18, 2024. On November 18, they went ring shopping together — a quiet promise of the future. And on March 18, 2025, Charles got down on one knee and proposed to Sydney on the beach, with the waves as their witness.

Now, on May 16, 2026, nearly four years to the day of their very first blind date (July 16th, 2022), Charles and Sydney are saying “I do.”

They chose to marry on a sun-kissed beach in the Caribbean Sea — a place that represents both Sydney’s Belizean roots and Charles’ love of tropical beauty. It’s only fitting. So many of their favorite memories — from Newport and Oceanside to San Diego and Belize — have been wrapped in ocean breezes and golden sunsets. The beach has been their place of peace, of growth, and of love.

Charles and Sydney’s story is one of divine timing, second chances, and a love that bloomed not in perfect circumstances, but in obedience, patience, and grace. From a blind date to forever, this is just the beginning of their greatest adventure yet.
