Advice

Weather

It is very very unlikely that you will see any rain at all, if we have had a good season the bush will still be a bit green but water will be drying up and the animals will be gathering near rivers to drink. Usually it will be high teens at night and mid 20s in the day but expect possible highs of up to 28C and lows of down to 14C.

Bugs and Sun

Though May is heading into the dry season we still recommend bug spray, use DEET it's a few days and nothing else works here at all, spray your feet to prevent sand fleas moving in. The sun gets intense in the middle part of the day, burns don't last as long as in NZ but still use sunscreen and keep in mind you will be on game drives for hours at a time so loose shirts, hats and sunnies are a must.. And a jersey to take with as the early mornings and late evenings (when you will be out on drives) can get fairly cool.

Malaria and Health

We have never had Malaria in the wedding area, in some nearby settlements it can be an issue but where you are you will be fine. Some very wild New Zealand doctors may try to insist you take anti malaria drugs, we find these pills make people loopy, psycho, nuts.. We do keep malaria test kits and drugs which cure it onsite (for traveling to areas such as Mozambique so if there ever was an issue it's an easy fix). Ditto rabies and yellow fever, not a big issue in this area, don't pet dogs unless they obviously belong to a management type person and are very tame.

Currency and prices

Local currency is "Rand" one NZ dollar is usually worth about ten rand. R10 - $1 R100 - $10 R1000 - $100 The highest value note available is R200 - $20, cash isn't often needed as most places take card and it's unsafe to carry a lot of cash. Tipping 10% at restaurants is appreciated (for table service, not needed for takeaways) at all inclusive lodges some guests choose to tip their game rangers if they were very helpful or anyone who has made their experience very good, even $20 is usually well received as a thank you from a family. It is not required anywhere the way it is in USA etc. Many things are cheap, imported things are very very expensive, you can buy flip flops for as low as $2.50 and a pint of beer or 200ml glass of wine for around $4 most places, fancy places can be more expensive..
