NYT Puzzles Escape Game FAQ

Why is this here?

We've tried to come up with a unique activity that represents us as a couple for our guests to do during our wedding. We do the New York Times daily games together most days, so we've set up a puzzle-style game based on that.

I'm stuck. How do I get help?

We've added hint cards on the cocktail tables in case you get stuck. We know some of our friends also do these games, and we also encourage collaboration!

I'm done with the puzzles! What now?

We've set up lock boxes somewhere that take a combination. Once you have all the answers, combine them all into one combination and access your reward from the boxes.

New York Times Game Rules

Spelling Bee

photo

Summary

To play NYT Spelling Bee, use the seven given letters to form as many words as possible, with each word requiring the center letter and a minimum of four letters. You can reuse letters multiple times. Words that use all seven letters are called pangrams.

Rules

- Select the Center Letter: Each word you create must contain the designated center letter.

- Minimum Length: Words must be at least four letters long.

- Letter Usage: You can use any of the seven provided letters, including the center letter, more than once in a single word.

- Word Validity: The game's word list excludes offensive words, obscure words, hyphenated words, and proper nouns.

- Pangrams: A "pangram" is a word that includes every one of the seven letters in the puzzle, and it provides a point bonus.

Connections

photo

Summary

In the NYT Connections game, your goal is to find four groups of four words from a grid of 16 words that share a specific common theme. You make groups by clicking on four words and submitting them; if incorrect, you lose a "life" and have four total mistakes allowed before the game ends.

Rules

- 16 Words: Each puzzle starts with a grid of 16 words.

- Four Groups: You must find four distinct groups of four words each.

- Common Themes: Each group of four words shares a specific, often tricky, common theme or category.

- Submit Groups: Select four words you think belong together and click "Submit".

Strands

photo

Summary

In Strands, you connect letters to form words within a 6x8 grid, aiming to find all words that fit a daily theme and the special "spangram" word which spans the grid and describes the theme. Each letter is used once, and words can twist and turn in any direction, including diagonally. Every letter on the board must be used to complete the puzzle.

Rules

- Find Theme Words:

Look for words related to the daily theme, highlighted in blue.

- Connect Letters: Tap or click and drag letters in order to spell out words, moving up, down, left, right, or diagonally.

- Use the Spangram: Identify the spangram, which connects two opposite sides of the board and defines the theme.

- Complete the Grid: The goal is to use every letter on the board to form all the theme words and the spangram, filling the entire grid without overlap.

Wordle

photo

Summary

In Wordle, you have six tries to guess a hidden five-letter word. After each guess, tiles turn green for letters in the correct spot, yellow for letters in the word but the wrong spot, and gray for letters not in the word. Each guess must be a valid five-letter word, and letters can be repeated.

Rules

- Objective: Guess the secret five-letter word within six attempts.

- Guesses: You have six guesses to solve the daily puzzle.

- Valid Words: Each guess must be a real five-letter word found in Wordle's dictionary.

- Color Feedback: After each guess, the tiles change color to give you clues:

- Green: The letter is correct and in the right position.

- Yellow: The letter is in the word but in the wrong position.

- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

- Repeated Letters: The answer can contain repeated letters, and the feedback will reflect this (e.g., two "O"s in "robot" can appear as two yellow or two green, or one yellow and one green)
