It’s not every day you meet your future spouse while half naked. But that’s exactly what happened when Christina met Christopher for the first time in Daytona Beach. Well burnt and desperately trying to apply enough sunscreen, Christopher managed to leave a memorable first impression with the soon-to-be Dr. Gilmour. After a long day of cracking jokes, stacking cards, and playing beach volleyball, Chris left his phone number in the door of her car. Fortunately for him she found it before driving off. Despite having grown up practically right down the street in New York State, Christina and Christopher found themselves two hours apart in Florida. Christina was studying for her PhD, and Christopher was learning how to fly planes. A successful gamble by Christopher resulted in Christina meeting him in Orlando, unintentionally allowing for a first date. A week after he sent her up to New York from Orlando International, Chris took time off to pick her up from the airport. Acting the part of chauffeur for both Christina and a slobbery Frenchie named Jax, the following Hollerbach’s date over schnitzel somehow worked. Christina’s attention was garnered and Chris somehow managed to keep it. Making a point to visit as often as possible, Chris and Christina were determined to make things work. From Gainesville to Orlando, they traded trips back and forth during what weekends they could. They both memorized the drive as the journey became routine. Trips to The Swamp for UF tailgates and kayaking dates became the norm. Multi-level cross-examinations by Christina’s friends slowly gave Chris the green light. He was deemed an acceptable level of weird. Plus he was tall so that worked in his favor. The ultimate test was yet to come though. A trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom brought with it the most rigorous of tests yet: Julia Alexis Gilmour. If Chris received her blessing, or at least a 3.5 out of 5 star Yelp review by Julia, the way was paved for Christina keeping him around. A bit of Otto luck and a large dose of sharp Gilmour wit resulted in Julia giving a half-enthusiastic thumbs up. Despite the humidity, long lines, screaming children, and the looming threat of a hangry Julia, Chris was deemed worthy enough to continue sharing time with Christina. The next four years would take them around the world. Whether peering over the edge of The Grand Canyon, exploring the Icefields Parkway up into the Canadian Rockies, surfing an afternoon away at Australia’s Bondi Beach, or climbing the Athenian Acropolis, Chris and Christina traveled as a team everywhere they went. For now, they’ve landed in Chicago. Who knows where they’ll end up next.
