Toph and Katheryn met on the first day of law school. Toph admired Katheryn's confidence and agility when she answered questions in class. Katheryn enjoyed Toph's thoughtfulness in conversation. They became good friends through an identical class schedule, a shared volunteer placement, and a range of mutual interests. (When Katheryn mentioned her love of Jesuit theology, Toph lent her a favorite novel on the subject. Katheryn is still borrowing it.)



After months of summoning the courage, Toph asked Katheryn for a date during their second year of school. Knowing that neither would be able to study for their other exams after taking their eight-hour Federal Jurisdiction final, he invited her to dinner at Volstead's Emporium, a local speakeasy-style restaurant.

Katheryn said yes. (Unbeknownst to him, Katheryn confessed to a friend the night before she had a crush on Toph).



After that first date, they never looked back. Their romance featured countless scoops of ice cream, one cancelled marathon, one uncancelled marathon, thousands of Bluebooked footnotes, twenty new cocktail recipes, one visit to a national park, one denied entrance to the U.S. Supreme Court, and one bottle of wine consumed in the airport at 8:00am.



Toph popped the question on May 19, 2024. Toph suggested they go for walk through the Lyndale Rose Garden before meeting some friends for brunch. But the friends had prepared something better than brunch: they secretly arranged a basket of flowers and wine in the garden, and hid in the bushes with cameras.



Katheryn said yes.



Katheryn and Toph will be living on Cathedral Hill in St. Paul, Minnesota. Katheryn loves the neighborhood for its restaurants and good sidewalk running. Toph loves that F. Scott Fitzgerald was born just a few blocks away. Both of them love that they get to start a home together. They are excited to celebrate with you on January 18, 2025.
