We met in the British Virgin Islands 10 years ago.
Like every good legal drama we first met in Court on opposite sides of a case - for the movie buffs among you - about the estate of the cult Hollywood director Roger Corman. Being on opposite sides of a case is never an auspicious start. Although 18 months later wanting to be with the better legal team, Claire went to work at the same firm as Jonathan. The inauspicious start however continued when on her first day, Jonathan 'delegated' an advice to Claire to draft. This apparently did not enamor Jonathan to Claire nor, given her reaction, her to him (and with that we inadvertently vindicated the premise of every legal romcom ever).
Claire then remembers thinking of Jonathan as a bit of a lad about town and wondering whether a girlfriend he talked about actually existed. She did exist but fortunately for Claire that relationship didn't last.
Claire and Jonathan became friends and Jonathan made sure that when he went for his daily walk to the newsagent near the office, he would return with a bar of dairy milk (no Milk Tray in BVI) for Claire too.
At this point Claire thought it would be a fabulous idea to try to match make Jonathan with pretty much any woman she could think of who may be single. Claire has never really focused much on suitability criteria and again fortunately for Claire this meant that her efforts were doomed.
After a few years as work friends, things really changed for Claire and Jonathan after hurricane Irma hit the BVI and devastated the island. Claire was the first person to call Jonathan after the storm and we kept in touch regularly until we could return to the BVI. We did not see each other for almost six months. When Claire returned to the BVI for her first trip after the storm, Jonathan collected her from the airport and greeted her with curry from her favorite curry house which was soldiering on despite limited power and a storm ravaged kitchen.
Claire already has two children, Arthur and Eviya, who are part of the wedding party (possibly the noisiest part). Jonathan first met them when they were very young when he would come over for Sunday cake and Arthur would insist on endless games of hide and seek and 'war'(!)
Eviya, however, only recalls meeting Jonathan in San Juan airport where he occupied them with a game of bingo. Eviya is still convinced that Jonathan lived alone in the airport and was in fact her first rescue human. Jonathan has, however, clearly grown on her - to say that she has him wrapped around her little finger would be an understatement. Jonathan says Eviya is his spirit animal - Claire thinks this is because Eviya loves rice as much as he does.
Either way our story and hence our big day is incomplete without both Arthur and Eviya also at the centre of it.
