Our Wedding

Corinne and Michael met on OkCupid (the website) in early 2010. Corinne reached out first, intrigued by Michael's profile. They chatted about NPR podcasts,&nbsp;cooking, and their favorite Muppets. Eventually, they met up for brunch. Corinne thought this was a date, but Michael wasn't so sure. It must have gone well enough that later on the same day, Michael invited Corinne to the University of Wisconsin &nbsp;hockey game.&nbsp;The Badgers scored more than 5 goals, meaning that free frozen custard was in our future. After custard, our next meeting was for ice skating on a frozen pond. While holding hands and skating along, Michael asked Corinne out for a date. Wasn't this already a date?! At present, we still argue about the anniversary of our first date.

The Meeting

Corinne and Michael went to Japan in September 2017. Corinne had gotten a scholarship to present some of her PhD research at a conference, and she brought Michael along as her carry-on luggage. He was planning on asking her on Mt. Fuji, but her plans changed last minute, so there was no time for Mt. Fuji. The only free day they had in Tokyo was the very last day of the trip, but a Japanese friend of Corinne's offered to give them a full-day tour. We did the fish market, temples, kabuki theater, sumo wrestling, and a multi-course Japanese dinner. At the end of the evening, we get dropped off at Tokyo Station, and Michael suggested that we find ice cream. We eat the ice cream outside, looking at the city lights, but then rain from a typhoon starts in, so we head inside to a pretty rotunda entrance. Often when we walk hand in hand, Michael will spin Corinne. At the end of this particular spin, Michael had the rings out and asked Corinne to marry him. Without thinking, Corinne&nbsp;said yes!&nbsp;

The Engagement

Both the rings and the box are special. We had the rings custom made in mokume gane, a Japanese metal-working technique made to look like wood grain. We had the white gold melted down from both of our class rings to have our wedding rings made. When Michael had asked Corinne's father for her hand, he also requested that her father make a ring box. Corinne's father is an artist and a woodworker, so we now have a custom ring box!

We have singles and doubles set away for our guests at the Holiday Inn Austin-Town Lake. The rooms are available for Friday and Saturday, but you can get the discounted rate for a few extra days if call in and book -&nbsp;just ask for&nbsp;Lovinia Rodriguez or&nbsp;Marisa Sandoval. The hotel is located on the edge of downtown, near <a href="https://austinot.com/lady-bird-lake-activities-austin" target="_blank">Lady Bird Lake</a>&nbsp;(everyone calls it Town Lake). It is walking distance from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=65&v=2j6GtXlKqZk" target="_blank">Rainey Street</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Kc73tT2SA" target="_blank">6th Street</a>, and is a&nbsp;short drive to <a href="https://franklinbbq.com/" target="_blank">Franklin's Barbecue</a> and <a href="https://craftmeatsaustin.com/" target="_blank">Micklethwait Craft Meats</a>. There is plenty to do for everyone! Our venue is just 3.5 miles away too.







The hotel has free wifi, free parking, and free&nbsp;transit to and from the airport (you'll just have to call the front desk and ask for a pickup from&nbsp;the airport).&nbsp;

This is our favorite BBQ in Austin. It's a bit out of the way, but the line is usually shorter than what you would see at Franklin Barbecue or Terry Blacks.
