Jose and I met by chance four and a half years ago through a Christian group called, "Greater Houston Christian Singles Activities." This group creates interesting and exciting events for singles to meet up, make new friends, and fellowship together. There happened to be a fun event called, a "Hawaiian Luau" that caught my attention because it was set up next to a lake house. So, I invited my friends Claudia and Laura. I picked up my friend Claudia from her house and then we were off cruising along the highway to the event.
This was our first time trying this group's events out. We had no idea what to expect but we were so excited about trying something new! Once we got there to the place we could see a volleyball court set up with people playing, other out door games being played, and delicious catered Hawaiian food being served to each guest at the serving line. Well, those that know me know I went straight to the serving line for some good food. Claudia and I sat down, we finished our food, and we started to get to know other people at the event.
It was around 7:00pm and the sun set was already shining beautifully on the lake side water. It was also time for the Hawaiian entertainers to put on their evening fire show. The entertainers did various tricks with fire. It was at this time that I was trying to make a video from my phone but the two gentlemen in front of me had big heads and it was hard for me to do this and get a good view. It was somewhat crowded so I tapped one of them on the shoulder to see if he could move over a bit.
The man turned around introduced himself (it was Jose), he scooted over, and gave me lots of space to take my video. We instantly struck a conversation (a few minutes turned into 2 hours), we found out we were around the same age, had the same Christian beliefs, and enjoy trying new things such as events, and (especially good food). We both prayed for several months about whether we should become a couple. God gave us both an answer and peace to proceed forward as a couple through courtship.
During the past 4 years and 3 months we have had the chance to get to know each other better, understand each other's strengths and weaknesses, and we have been there for each other when things have been good and not so good. Jose and I continue to support each other and be each other's biggest fan. We have also built trust and communication with each other, have talked about our expectations for now and the future, and look forward to creating a life together with God's help.
