The Girl Meets The Boy At A Small Town Homecoming
"Meeting Austin was like meeting a new friend on the first day of school. Instantly comforting and safe. I approached his tailgate at Hanover's homecoming feeling nervous and out of place. I didn't really know anyone else there besides the friend I arrived with. Austin was the first to greet us as we walked up and welcomed us to the tailgate, offering us his drinks, and inviting us to play games with his friends. My first impression of Austin is the best reflection of his character. He sees people, cares deeply for people (even strangers), and wants people to feel included. He's the most selfless and caring man I've ever known. I was instantly and inevitably drawn to him (yes, even after he stopped me mid-kiss to take off his hat and tell me he's bald). If I'm being honest with myself, I loved Austin from the first day we met. My heart was irrevocably his from day one and I'm eternally grateful that he asked me to keep it forever. Our story continues on, as most cliches or Emily Henry novels do, and I am so so lucky to do this life with him. Austin, I can't wait to marry you. I love you." -Dabney <3
Waiting to Meet Until the Right Time
When I tell people that Dabney and I met at Hanover College homecoming, the first question I always get asked is if we knew each other while in school, and surprisingly, we didn’t. It’s incredible that at a school as small as Hanover, with many of the same friends, my future wife and I likely crossed paths several times. We ate in the same dining hall, went to the same parties, hiked the same trails, but didn’t meet until we were meant to. The day we met, Dabney and some friends stopped by the tailgate that my friends and I set up for homecoming. Luckily for me, it turns out if you show someone where you’ve hidden your fully stocked cooler, they’ll stay for a while! At some point throughout the night we realized that we only lived about 5 miles from each other in Fishers. We decided to meet up at The Rathskeller in Indianapolis the following weekend and have been inseparable ever since. It instantly felt like we had known each other forever, it was effortless. Dabney has the ability to light up every room she walks in and makes everyone she meets feel special. You can tell a lot about someone based on their friends and family and I am so blessed for the people Dabney has brought into my life. I don’t think anyone in that tailgate tent could have imagined that 3 years later, almost to the day, we would all be getting together again for our wedding, looking back I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I went back for homecoming that year to catch-up with old friends and reminisce on my “glory days”, and ended up meeting the person I’m going to spend the rest of my life with, who has shown me that the best years are yet to come.
