Our Wedding

💙 Can you imagine two people who grew up in the same city, went to the same high school, knew each others siblings, but never each other? Dani and Walter both grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia and attended First Colonial High School, only a year apart. While their paths took them on two very different journeys- Walter enlisting in the Coast Guard and Dani sinking her heels into public safety- they crossed again in November 2019, while Walter was in town for training. Their first date turned into two, as their dinner spilled into drinks and hours of talking. And even though Walter was moving to Texas in a few short months, something just clicked. After a few more dates, they decided to keep in communication long distance, unofficially, and learn more about each other through trips and Facetimes. But then 2020 hit and everyone was quarantined. The trips were put off, but they still spoke every day for hours, much to the dismay of the people around them. By August, it was hard to keep the L word to themselves. A trip was booked for Dani to visit Walter in Pensacola for September, but it seemed utterly too far away. So one night, during their nightly FaceTime, Dani and Walter finally told each other how in love they were. Another hitch in the plan happened 2 days before Dani was set to take off, when Hurricane Sally hit the Gulf Coast and Walter's condo was under 3 feet of water. He was evacuated to Alabama, but it wasn't enough to deter Dani. After landing in Pensacola, she hired a rental car and drove to Orange Beach. They shared their first kiss in over 9 months. For the next year, they continued to grow their relationship in-between deployments and crazy shift work. Plane tickets and luggage that never ended up unpacked, littered their bedrooms. In October 2021, they experienced a traumatic event that would make or break most couples. But they stayed strong, communicated thoroughly, and thrived. Dani packed up her belongings and cats, and traveled halfway across the country to move to San Antonio, Texas in December 2021, to officially begin their lives together. Through ups and downs, holidays away from families, and even more deployments, Dani and Walter learned how to navigate life as a team. They even added one more member to their family, when a young Bubba followed Walter on a tennis court until he brought him home. He was the perfect addition and both felt like God placed him in their lives when they needed him the most. When Walter decided in 2023 to leave active duty, their new path led them to Fairfax, Virginia. It was back on the East Coast, 30 minutes from Washington D.C., and just far enough from family where they couldn't pop in unannounced. 😅 But in March of 2024, they decided that near family was where they wanted to be. One more move brought them back to Virginia Beach, so that they could watch their nieces and nephews grow up. Their favorite thing to do together is to go on impromptu trips. Whether it was Austin to visit friends, Houston or DC to watch an NBA Game, state parks to hike to beautiful peaks, or Baltimore where they left with the worst flu, their adventures continue to carry their love through time and space. Walter took Dani to a romantic cabin in Diggs, Virginia in January of 2025. Caught in a snow storm, he asked her to dance in the small kitchen to Morgan Wallen's Spin You Around. Midway through the song, he dropped to his knee and finally asked her to marry him, amid words of love and adoration. Through tears, she could do nothing but say YES emphatically. And now, they're tired of waiting to make their last names one. So please join the happy couple in September, one day after their 5th anniversary, to celebrate their love and union to each other under God and with their families and friends around them. 💙

Finally, Forever

They discussed marriage fairly early on, knowing that there was no one else for them. Dani even accidently proposed in 2022 on Facebook, much to Walter's chagrin when the influx of text messages began. For 2 years, Walter heard from friends, family, and even strangers on when he would pop the question. It never seemed like the perfect time, and they had a lot more growing to do. He finally realized there wouldn't ever be a perfect time, especially after she fell asleep before midnight on New Years 2024 and ruined his first proposal plan. Dani, completely oblivious to this, was more than excited to get away for a weekend when he suggested they have a romantic trip to a cabin. The rest is history.

They say your first best friend is your sister, and I met mine at just over a year old. We ran our parents ragged running around the house, usually without clothes, screaming TLC lyrics or reenacting the latest WWE smackdown. We fought more as we grew older, but there was never a day that went  by where we were mad for longer than a few hours(except for that one time your team beat my team in basketball. I will always be mad). Through ups and downs, childbirths, breakups, and even shared traumas, our bond is stronger than ever. She is the first person I call(besides my mom), and someone I can rely on. Elle also made me an aunt, which is THE most important responsibility I hold. She was the only choice for my Matron of Honor.

As the eldest sister, there is a certain degree of love that you have for your baby sister. Sami is brash, smart, and one of the funniest people I know. Her love for animals outweighs her patience for humans (relatable) and she has thrived in the animal veterinary field as the only sibling with a true college degree! I am so proud of how far she has come, and how amazing a person she has grown to be. Six and a half years younger, almost to the date, I remember being completely obsessed with her little blonde self when she was born. She was the baby of the family and definitely leaned into that role, but naturally, that just made us older girls jealous. We may have picked on her a little too much, but as an adult, she does not take nonsense from anyone. She is strong, independent, and sometimes mean, but she is the balance in my life that I need. 

Samantha St George

When we moved back from New York in 1999, my sisters and I started at Star of the Sea Catholic School. As the weird, loud, new girl, I was obviously very nervous being in a new place. But when I entered Mrs. Paul's first grade class, Brittany gave me a run for my money. We were stuck together like glue-our future separated seating chart assignments proof of our teachers dismay. Sleepovers during the Kid's Choice Awards, basketball games and parties, and way too many sightings of naked old women at the rec center locker room built the foundation of our 26 year friendship. She abandoned me for Nebraska thanks, Uncle Sam) in 5th grade. Despite that, our friendship has outlasted and thrived. I truly consider her my twin flame, my soul-sister. We were separated to preserve the peace of the world. Even if we only see each other once or twice a decade, our bond is unbreakable and her spot by my side was solidified back in 1999.

Brittany Howard

I met Kristen early on in my relationship with Walter, as she was his sister-in-law and close friend. From the very beginning, she was a confidant and huge support system for the both of us. It's not easy to assimilate into a family, especially when your partner is away for months at a time. But Kristen would check on me, include me in family functions, and made me feel so loved and welcomed. I can talk to her about anything, knowing that her advice will be unmatched and without judgment or criticism. She has also been essential in helping me rebuild my relationship with God. She is an incredible and patient mother, and has incorporated me as an aunt to her sons from the very beginning. Kristen is the kindest, most sincere person I know. I am so blessed to be able to share a last name with her and officially be sisters!

I first met Moriah on a Facetime call while Walter was on deployment and at a port call in Japan. His tendency to drunkenly pass the phone to the next person led to the beginning of an easy, beautiful friendship. Moriah is the most genuine and giving person I know. She is the friend to offer help without needing to be asked, who will check up on you when she knows you're struggling, and can just veg on the couch together watching movies for hours and accidently forgetting about the cookies in the oven. She kept me sane when the Coast Guard boys would invade our apartment and has a knack for keeping me grounded. Most importantly, she was a support system for Walter when they were deployed during one of the worst times of our lives. There is nothing I can say that will properly express my gratitude to her for that. She also led the peer pressure team for Walter to propose, which solidified her spot standing with us both. 

Moriah North

When Sami came home with her new best friend from the barn, this innocent little girl was immediately accepted as my new little sister. From the age of 11, Maddy has been a part of our family. Her huge heart for animals made her fit in like a missing puzzle piece. Through ups and downs, arguments and trauma, Maddy has been along for the ride. Her and Sami occasionally share a brain cell and it is endless entertainment. Whether we're playing videos games, taking a day trip to DC, or introducing me to my two new best friends, Hank and Harvey, the Highland cows, we are always making memories together. She makes me laugh constantly and takes the blonde jokes in stride. She is my little sister, blood or last name be damned. I can't wait for her to stand with me!

My brother and I have lived in many different environments and locations. Growing up in a Navy family was challenging, but we were great at adapting. When we first moved out of Virginia Beach in 2008, we were mad and shaved our heads to protest the idea. That was a good metaphor to show the solidarity we developed. We shared the same hobbies and values growing up. We bonded over our love of the same sports teams (LA Rams, Lakers) and playing different sports (basketball, soccer, tennis). We grew closer ever since our college days. I spent many weekends driving from Radford to UVA. I now appreciate our bond more than ever. I love being an uncle to his kids and sharing conversations about our hatred for office jobs and being corporate stooges. I rely on him for life advice. Hopefully his ego doesn’t skyrocket after seeing this. 

Ian Lovering

Nearly my whole Coast Guard career, Alex and I suffered through and survived insane events together. We met in Intel school in 2019 and quickly spent a lot of time together. We should have gotten in trouble for acting a fool a few times. We moved to Texas for our first duty station afterwards and became roommates. That process could not have been more chaotic. We had to abandon our families during Christmas of 2019 to report to our new unit even though they weren’t ready for our arrival and housing wasn’t available. That began our Texas tour of staying in random hotels. Through global pandemics, hurricanes, deployments, I’ve never laughed harder or shared more ridiculous memories. I’m not going to try to explain our humor further because it wouldn’t make sense to the average normal person. He’s the only person who understands why I’m as disgruntled as I am, because we shared many of the same service related experiences.

Alex Pieken

Mason and I have been connected for about 25 years and always remained close despite our lives going down different paths. A lot of our friendship has been long distance but it hasn’t affected the quality of memories we’ve made. He’s the only person that could convince me to come visit a city as cold as Cleveland in the winter. Later on we both lived in Texas and were able to spend a lot more time together. I appreciate his unique sense of humor, there’s never a boring moment. We now share the bond of being proud cat and dog dads. He is not allowed to be my boxing trainer anymore, however. 

Mason Holt

Cody and I have been friends since the early 2000s. It began with spending a lot of time playing basketball together and then we had the same group of friends in Virginia Beach. He was briefly my manager at a car wash, but we don’t bring that up. We spent many weekends partaking in VB oceanfront shenanigans and trashing my brothers house. I appreciate our dynamic; he always has my back even though he tries to troll and rip me off in fantasy football trades. 

Cody Hall

Villey is the only person I still speak to from high school. We don’t speak of that time much though cause it was trash. We’ve also shared memories from college and our prime 20s. He’s insanely weird but I respect  that vibe. He’s seen me in my good days and rough days trying to grow up. I think we’ve both matured over the years, but we still revert back to dumb teenagers when we spend time together. He’ll never beat me in ping pong, unfortunately for him. 

Villey Tidwell

David was my first best friend and witnessed me grow up from middle school until now. What a weird time. I thought I was cool and I needed to be humbled. We got in trouble back then for joking around in class, and may have been prohibited from speaking by teachers. We spent a lot of hours playing basketball and soccer together. He made me rage quit video games a few times. Even though we haven’t seen each other much since he joined the Navy, we’ll always be in each other’s corners. He doesn’t hesitate to rub in how much better his health and fitness journey is currently going than mine. I don’t hold it against him I need to be motivated. 

David Lissa

Though they are cousins, both boys affectionally address the couple as Didi and Uncle Walter. Bubba adores them almost more than his parents!

Our favorite thing to do together is traveling and going on adventures! We have been to New York, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, West Virginia, and so many more places on both impromptu and planned trips. For wedding gifts, we are asking for contributions to our Honeymoon Fund in lieu of gifts. We will be traveling to Italy for two weeks, exploring places like Milan, Tuscany, Rome, and Naples. We plan to end our Honeymoon on the beautiful island of Capri. We cannot wait to explore the culture and eat a lot of amazing food. Please send suggested places and restaurants as well!
