Well, you are in farm country in Massachusetts now. And just a couple of miles from our home: Haggis Farm in Pepperell. Here are some of our favorite places to visit, things to do, and local restaurants to dine in.
Kayak or canoe the Nashua River which is just 1/2 mile from our house. The lovely people of Nashoba Paddler will rent you all the gear you need for a relaxing paddle on the calm river. Plenty of wildlife to be seen!
The best ice cream in Massachusetts, no arguments accepted!! Locally made and a longtime favorite, and there are 2 locations each about 20-25 minutes away. Westford is the original location and is quite the complex now. You can not only have your ice cream (and eat it too), but you can play mini/crazy golf, ride bumper boats, there's an arcade, and food from the grill too.
For a less action packed experience, visit Kimball Farm in Lancaster at: 1543 Lunenburg Road, Lancaster, MA.
About 12 minutes drive from Groton center is Far and Near, a Trustees of Reservations property. For a nature walk through woodlands, wetlands, and around an old cranberry bog, this is truly a lovely spot for a relaxing stroll.
For a super yummy breakfast sandwich, healthy salad, or delicious sandwiches, we recommend the Blackbird Café in Groton. You'll have to drive here but it will be worth it, we promise. Fresh produce and yummy food.
(And then just next door in the same plaza, is Dolce Amar, a lovely Italian bakery!)
The fabulous Italian bakery... breakfast goodies & sweet treats
Another fabulous dining location is Gibbet Hill Grill & it is located just across the wetland from The Groton Inn. Especially known for the dry-aged steaks from cows which you may see graving on the hill.
(And worth noting that this is where Danielle's sister, Dre, and her husband, Chris, got married.)
One of our local favorites, with a farm-to-table vibe, and amazing views of Gibbet Hill. Owned & managed by The Groton Inn.
Almost directly across the street from the Groton Inn, is Salt & Light Cafe/Bakery - a Groton classic for coffee, breakfast, and lunch. Open till 2 pm.
If you want a proper hike, but don't want to head north into New Hampshire to the White Mountains (really proper hiking), Mount Wachusett is a nice hike just 45 minutes/30 miles/50 kilometers from Groton. Please note trails are not that long, but some can get quite steep. We definitely recommend having the proper hiking footwear.
Local and tropical butterflies in an indoor garden. Lovely and magical
A lovely, local winery where you can relax on the porch, by the pond, in the field, or sample their wines by the flight in the tasting room. These are not your 'Old World' wines, but the whites are refreshing on a warm summer day!
There is also a restaurant, distillery, and brewery to sample from!
Another lovely little spot for a stroll through gardens - both natural and designed. Really lovely in the summer, Keith and Danielle discovered this location while house hunting in the area. About 20 minutes/15 miles/24 kilometers from Groton center.
